My son has the educational version of Avid Express Pro HD and would like to import some mpeg video he shot with a sony digital camera. He tried to import directly to Avid but got a message that the format was not compatible. Is there a converter out there that will convert mpeg to an Avid friendly format…shareware or for purchase? Or is he doing it wrong?

You’ll have to convert the file to (preferably) to QuickTime. I think Avid will take .avi, but QT is pretty universal. If you don’t have a program called Sorenson Squeeze, for $30.00 you can buy Quicktime Pro from Apple’s website. You should be able to convert it with that.

MPEG Streamclip is free and very robust as well.

I downloaded that and it seems pretty cool. My one concern is the fact you either have to buy Quicktime Pro (it’s only $29.99) or using Quicktime alternate. I know its real QT wrapped in a different program with MPEG support, but I’d be leary about messing around with QT on a production machine. I might put it on my encoding machine….

You are correct though, its very robust and a great program for free.
