The cheapest way to learn Avid is to post here at the COW! A great reference for any Avid editor is the ‘Avid Handbook‘ by Steve Bayes. I can’t keep a copy because people keep ‘borrowing’ it… I’ve also used the training DVD’s Avid sells – kinda’ pricey, but nice. If you have the money, I also recommend taking a 101 class.

Assuming you are controlling the deck via firewire, make sure you select ‘OHCI’ as the channel in the deck settings.

Would it be safe to assume you’ve NEVER gotten control of a deck in Avid?

The HC1000 is not listed on the supported devices list – my guess is that is the problem. Have you tried setting it up with the generic template?

Sure its possible – as long as you don’t have more than 1 layer of FX (the key + background, no FX).

Are you going to be laying a lot of stuff to tape?

Everything Michael says – back up your files. We just upgraded to MC 2.8 from XPress, and I can verify projects will open just fine, and the media is there.

I believe (although I might be wrong – I don’t do any 24p projects) you can create a new project with the correct settings, then open the old project bins within the new project.

Try using one of the modifier keys (I don’t run Avid on a Mac anymore, so I don’t have a way to check this), like alt or command.

I’ve never had luck importing AVI’s. Very long imports for me as well. Have you tried converting the AVI to a QT?

Have you ever had audio playing through the speakers when editing in the Avid? What version of Quicktime do you have? Do you have any outboard audio gear plugged into the Avid (an MBox, for example)?

Do you mean having the finder windows disapaer when you activate an application? I don’t think there is a way to lose the finder windows. In an application, usually command + H will hide the application, but finder windows? Not so much…
