Check your format type. I had a similiar problem, and it turned out the drive was formatted FAT32. I reformatted to NTFS, and it started working again.

Where are you exporting to? I’ve had problems with the cheap USB drives. They usually come formatted as FAT32. Reformat to NTFS, and its golden. Also, check and make sure your not exporting AVI.

If your audio is overmodulated on the source, there isn’t much you can do with it. A program like Sound Forge can smooth out the clipping, but it will still not sound right.

Try rolling back to service pack 2 (XPress isn’t certified for SP 3). If you still have problems, please post back with your full system specs.

The biggest problem I see is your OS – you need XP Professional, svc pack 2. Media Center works, then it doesn’t. At least that’s what I’ve heard from people who try to run it.

You will find a big disparity in opinions on this one. There are the folks who “built it with spit and baling wire, and it works fine”, and the “buy from Avid and no one else” camp. Well, maybe not to many of those. I tend to fall in the more cautious camp. I have neither the time, energy or knowledge to build my own system. I need something that works out of the box. I will buy my 4th system from a reseller. My previous 3 are working flawlessly, and I haven’t spent a lot of effort chasing down problems.
If you look at the minimum requirements, I think the thing that stands out is having the Mojo on an integrated FW port, not a PCMCIA card. Make sure you have the correct version of Quicktime and OS, and make sure your video card is approved. My sense is you’ll be fine.

Another thing to keep in mind is connectivity. On a laptop, USB and Firewire connections are at a premium. Any external drives will take up either a FW port, or you’ll need to get a card adapter for eSATA, SCSI, etc. The Avid requres a USB dongle – add the inevitble thumb drive for transferring graphics, maybe a wired mouse… You get the idea.
Finally, MAKE SURE you buy a laptop or workstation configured to Avid’s specification (clickey). There is nothing more frustrating than opening your shiney new software only to discover it conflicts with a video card or the motherboard. Better yet, find a local reseller. Online resellers are just a notch below local, IMHO (I only say that because of the hassle of sending it back through the mail, etc.) Yes, it will cost a little more, but if something goes wrong you have someone to take it back to. If you are serious about making money with your machine, its a worthwhile investment.

With your media in your new edit machine, have you tried hilighting you sequence and selecting ‘relink’? I don’t use relink much (in fact I’ve never needed to use it). Hopefully someone else can jump in here and share some knowledge…

You could also try to export your Quicktime reference, then start Sorenson and encode as normal. In other words, don’t have Avid start up Sorenson.
