First, you do have your keyboard mapped, right? I mean, mapped how it would be in FCP.

I’m not sure I understand your problem, but wouldn’t you be able to create the same thing with an insert edit? If I don’t get it, please explain.

As for moving clips, I’ve got segment mode mapped to ‘C’. I’d click on ‘C’ (segment mode), and use the ‘M’ and ‘/’ key (10 frames left or right), and the ‘,’ and “.” keys (1 frame left or right). Keep in mind, if you are not in segement mode, then you will slip / slide your footage, not move the clip.

While in segment mode, you can lasso the clips (from right to left) and select them as well.

Hang in there! I’m not sure I could be as fast if I had to move to FCP. I think the key (as discussed here several times) is to not edit on the Avid as you would on FCP. Spend some quality time with the manual, look at how the keyboard is mapped (control / command + 3), do some custom mapping. I think you’ll find Avid can be as intuitive, just in a different way.

A caution – if you are connected to the internet, and don’t have automatic updates in iTunes diabled, iTunes will update itself along with Quicktime. Then you’ll wonder why Avid isnt’ working so well…

Check the options of your export settings. Do you have either use enabled tracks or use marks selected?

I believe that’s the default. If you’ve upgraded recently, your settings could have gotten changed…

Just because its not on the list, doesn’t mean it won’t work. Lots of people here use systems either home-built or just slightly off, in terms of setup.

HOWEVER

IF you plan to use this system to make money, and
IF you are the kind who likes to edit, rather than poke around in the OS and hardware for hours,

Buy from a reseller.

Avid lists certified systems for a reason. They work. I’ve got 3 systems, and troubleshoot 8 more, and every one is a certified workstation. Sure they have odd problems here or there, but the problems are easily solved. I just don’t have the time to tinker with my money maker.

There is also an ‘audio follow video’ selection in the pulldown menu of the source monitor (click on the clip name). This will let you edit your good audio into the sequence, then you can cut trim and chop to your hearts content. Keep in mind, if you keep this on when you start editing, you’ll edit the bad audio as well.

Adding an in/out will allow you to adjust all the keyframes in the selected track(s). If you have your music ducking under narration, it’s probably best to do that individually.

The quick answer is XPress 4.6 needs QT 6.5 and OS 10.3.4.

I’d roll back your OS and QT, or upgrade to MC (I think it’s still $400.00)

I’d also turn off automatic updates. See if that will clear up your issues.

Where does your media live?

Keep in mind a bin in the Avid points to the media on a drive, typically an external or seperate drive. It doesn’t contain media, it just points to where the media is.

Try deleting your media database files in your media drive. When you start up MC, it’ll rebuild the media database.
