Yes, you should be able to move the project back and forth with no problems.

When you start media tool, there are 3 little check boxes – one for master clips, one for precomputes and the media files. If you don’t want to see precomputes, uncheck that box. Make sure you only have the project you are working with selected, and check only the drives you want to see. The file system of the Avid may not make sense to you, but it allows you to name clips anything you want with no penalty (even naming your clips the same thing).
Media tool is very powerful, but there is no need to be scared of it. Just curl up with the manual and get to know it a little better.

Get the MC DVD. If anything, you’ll want to upgrade sooner. XPress used the same code as MC, but with some features blocked.

I don’t work with 24p. However, can’t you transcode it (right click the clip, select consolidate / transcode)? Then you don’t have to worry about laying it back to tape…

If you are familiar with one interface over the other, start there.
Lots of things go into quality. What format do you work with the most? What format do you deliver (broadcast, web, VHS…)? And perhaps the big question, where do you want this system to take you? Do you want to open your own buisness? Freelance? Indie film?Answer those questions, and you’ll be on the way to answering your question.

I’d see if the client can work with a program mpeg2. It’s easy to create in Sorenson.
As far as 720p, you can mix and match any resolution AS LONG AS (notice the caveat?) it is the same frame rate.

I’d start with making sure the audio sampling rate matches the project. Generally, Avid defaults to 48k. If he recorded on a CD recorder, for instance, it probably recorded a 44.1 sampling rate. Either transcode the audio in Avid, or change the samping rate in settings>audio project.

I’m not sure what an OMFI directory is – could you explain?
Also, what are your system specs (machine, OS, RAM, video card, QT version…)

First, format that drive to NTFS. Then, transcode (but don’t change the resolution of) the footage you want to the drive. Put the project file in a top level folder, and your done.
