[STYLZ] “Well for editors just starting, I think it best they focus on the art of editing as oppoosed to the frustrating pitfalls”

You know the saying “that which does not kill you makes you stronger”? It’s kind of like that. You do have a point, but look at it this way. When you edit only perfectly shot and exposed footage, even as a first time student editor, you learn very robotic ways of editing. The ‘art’ of editing is to find creative ways around continuity mistakes, not blindly edit the way Zettel or Millerson tells you to edit. Learning to think on your feet, 2 shots ahead IS the art to editing. Anyone can put together a long shot, MS, CU, establising shot, etc., but when you can work around those problems effortlessly – THAT, my friend is the art of the edit. Remember, it’s all about the story.

Somewhere in the settings (I’m not near my XPress) is a setting called “use NTSC setup”. Maybe in general, or media creation, I forget.

[shooter] “Gotta have 2 MRXp 2000 gasmotrons and at least 1 vilsopak 1000”

Jees, I forgot about those. But I think the new P238 introduced at NAB will make them obsolete very quickly.

You say your digitizing via RGB, but the Z1 does not have RGB out, correct? How are you converting the footage from HDV to RGB? I suspect that might be the start of the problem…

Welcome! I hope the cow is as helpful to you as it is to me!

There is a setting that will notify you how much time is left on your drives. The default is 2 minutes. I suspect someone got in there and started mucking around with it. I believe it’s in the digitize settings.

[oakmozart] “With DNA, Avid is making everything themselves. They will keep it this way”

Which makes entirely too much sense. Can you imagine phone support for a build your own system? Yikes!

Thanks for the input Bill. I mentioned the demo artists only because at past NAB’s, there were plenty to go around. I found out they had been sold, and I even spoke to the president of the company. It looks like a good bet we’ll go with the Nova 16 input. I just wanted to make sure they weren’t flailing after a sale.

Cables, batteries, power, something to haul all this stuff in, a grip…

In addition to the budget, what will you be shooting? Run & gun? Interviews?

Don’t use DV. As related by others much smarter than I in this very thread, DV is a bear to key. DV is a compressed format, and the part of the signal you need to make a good key is thrown away in the compression process.

We’re using a Sony DVD writer for ‘master’ DVD’s taken from tape, and a Primera Bravo II system. It’s fairly idiot proof (and I can be a pretty big idiot…) and has worked almost flawlessly since November…
