    Hi all:

    This might come as a stupid question but I am having problems keeping a 1:1 lossless queality for any image sequence from Avid MC to work in combustion. The footage was shot on a sony HDV Z1 camera and brought into Avid via component YRB. When I export an image sequence, either uncompressed TIFF, TARGA or PNG the whole picture gets this very annoying softening that is very obvious when alternating the composited shots brought in from combustion with the shots inside the Avid.

    Any ideas as to why this is happening? I have tried to export a sequence and then import it right back and it is clear the loss of resolution happens somewhere down the export process.

    Should I try a different exporting process? Combustion is in a different machine.

    You say your digitizing via RGB, but the Z1 does not have RGB out, correct? How are you converting the footage from HDV to RGB? I suspect that might be the start of the problem…

    We used the sony HDV deck to capture the footage via component YRB.

    1. Are you exporting both fields when you create the image sequence? If not, you are throwing away half the image data.

    2. Have you tried exporting a Quicktime movie, animation codec at max quality? Do you get the same or better results?

    3. Is the problem only with the HDV footage, or with other footage as well? Have you tried the same workflow using non-HDV footage? Since HDV is recorded as MPEG2, I would be extremely careful about using anything in your workflow that compresses the picture again, as the image quality will degrade fast.

    4. Could the HDV footage be soft? Focus is extremely critical in all Hi-def work, and the HDV cameras are not the easiest to focus.

    I hope this gives you some food for thought.
