  • Alternative to Avid’s DNA hardware?

Posted by Samuel A. martin on April 22, 2005 at 5:03 pm

    Hi all:

I’d like to know if there are anyone running any versions of Avid on alternative stations and or hardware accelerator DNA. If so, which ones? What I/O cards? Any manufacturer in particular? etc. Would you do/don’t do it? We are quite a handy group in our facility, and a few days ago we tabled the fact that we need to upgrade our old MCs and might purchase/lease a symphony DS. We wondered whether we would be able to build our own systems, hence saving quite a lot I guess.

I am afraid we might hit problems with compatibility, but if we use top of the range components we shouldn’t.

Has any adventurous editor, engineer, freelance put together their own Avid station?

    Thanks

    Sam

So you are specifically asking, can you use AVID software – like AVID Xpress DV, with products from companies like AJA, Blackmagic, ProMax, Matrox, etc. instead of using the AVID Mojo or AVID Adrenline –

this is your answer – NO.

Agreed. Avid is a hardware company first and foremost. They build their software to run with their hardware. They are not interested in forging relationships with numerous companies, they do everything themselves (or when they have formed partnerships, it’s been with one specific company, such as Pinnacle, for example). This is why you do not see Matrox RTx.100 being offered for Avid, like it is for Premiere.

With DNA, Avid is making everything themselves. They will keep it this way.

Which makes entirely too much sense. Can you imagine phone support for a build your own system? Yikes!
