What are your projects like?
What is your budget?
Is it a corporate network environment? Will the network mgt. weenies flip out if you put a Mac on it?
Research some of the Avid v. FCP threads on both forums and choose.

We switched from AB to IDX. You can stack them, they seem lighter than an AB hytron. IDX makes an adapter plate so they mount right on a gold mount, or you can buy the plate to mount to the camera. We use 2 to shoot a football game (and honestly, we could probably get away with 1, but ther’s no use pushing our luck). We’ll shoot all day on productions on 1 IDX. Bloody brilliant, that.

1. All effects are ‘keyframable’. A better question might be are all effects infinitely keyframable? No, they all have limitations. You can promote most to 3D (button in bottom right of effects editor box)and get more options.
2. If the staple is red, you can’t (you’ve added an effect, or in the case of audio, changed a level). If you haven’t, go to clip>remove matchframe edits

Ask a carpenter how many hammers he has in his tool box. I’ll bet you’ll get the same answer you got here – “I’ve got a bunch of hammers in there – what do you want me to do?”

Part of the art of the edit (oopps, wrong forum 🙂 is to select the correct tools.

No issue in particular – and now that I think about it, since I’ve upgraded to 4.6, we’ve not had any problems with the Mojo. We have a Mackie 1602, so I’ve not had the desire to buy the Studio version.

Mojo has been 99% outstanding. Updating the firmware during software updates is a brilliant. The down side? No on/off button (occaisonally, you need to restart the Mojo) and the RCA audio inputs. I don’t think it affects the quality of the sound, but it makes connections to pro decks a bit of a pain. If you are going firewire only, it’s not really an issue.

As far as I’m concerned, there is no reason not to get a Mojo system (that is, if your skillset is invested in Avid). Otherwise, there is some great stuff out there – Premiere Pro, FCP, Pinnacle that is cheaper… It all depends on what you want to use it for…

I’m pretty sure you can, as long as you map a locater to your keyboard. Just bang it when you want it, and it’ll show up after the digitize if finished.

If you think FCP is better, go with it. I like Avid. I’ve not had a single problem that tech support didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t fix. In the fall, you’ll find me taking 45 minutes of top and field footage (including radio call), cramming it into the Avid and laying down to a 8 minute highlight package 6 hours later for a Sunday show. Of course Avid has it issues. So does FCP. No package is right for everyone. But there are a lot of packages out there that work for an awful lot of people.

Are you talking about the > & >>? Lasso the cut you want to slip (right to left, starting outside of the timeline). It’s different from the MC, but the principles are the same…
