First, start Audiosuite (tools>audiosuite) BEFORE you export and see if that helps.
Second, Avid is HORRIBLE at exporting anything other than QT (or reference) same as source (IMO).

Export full size QT reference, and use Sorenson to compress to a smaller size. The time it takes for the Avid to chunk out your small QT is about the same it will take to get a similiar product out of Sorenson (or Cleaner, or ProCoder, etc.)

Is the Lacie your storage drive? At 7200rpm, and firewire to boot, it’s no wonder it’s crashing. I’d go internal, or even SCSI…. But that’s just me.

I’m not trying to be rude (sometimes I don’t have to work that hard at it, thought!), but have you consulted the help files and / or manuals that came with your system? There is a wealth of information regarding the Avid. There are some pretty good tutorials as well…

You might want to search on decompose, and consolidate….

Are you using curves or HSL? If you look at the top left corner of the CC window, you’ll see a tab for the two. HSL is meant for more subtle changes, and curves offer a more drastic change. Try to get a hold of the books that should have come with the system – there is a good one on CC.

In tools there are three tools audio suite, audio tool and EQ. Do you not have books on this system? F1 will bring you directly to the help files…

Again, covered extensively in the manual. Basically, if I understand your question, you want to delete media after you’ve created a timeline. If you do that, you’ll delete all the media you used in your timeline. Remember the time is just a pointer to the media. if you digitize thirty seconds of media and use three seconds, you’ll still have 30 seconds of media. Do a search on decompose in the help files, or the manual.

You must resize you 4:3 footage – you’ll end up with black bars at the top, or really poor zoomed in footage, but either way, you will have to conform your 4:3 footage to 16:9….

You might want to spend some time with the tutorial included with every Avid. It’s a great jumping off point to answer a lot of these questions. Read the manual, and if you can afford it, Avid has three really good training DVD’s on their website…

If you are talking about decomposing, it’s a fairly simple matter detailed in the manual.

I do it like this –

Create a new bin. Duplicate your finished sequence (highlight the clip and cmnd/cntrl D), and drag a copy into your new bin. Go to clip>decompose. You’ll get a dialog box which will allow you to adjust your ‘handles’. click OK, and the Avid will create new clips associated with that sequence, but with no media. You can then delete all your old media (assuming you labled your tapes and media correctly) and re-digitize your media to a higher resolution. This is particularly handy when using multicam, and was developed back when storage cost thousands per gig, instead of hundreds.

If you are talking about a ‘crop’ function similiar to Photoshop where you can delete portions of the picture (or in this case, file) you don’t want, it doesn’t exsist. Most of this can be rectified in pre-production – going through your tapes and identifying specific shots you want to use.

In the effects pallet, under ‘image’, there is a resize effect. Drag that FX onto your clip, and it will fit yoru 16:9 footage into a 4:3 frame.
