That is strange. Will it play after it has been exported from AE or FCP?

Basically you need to shoot a plate of the ambulance driving by without your actor. Then you need a plate of the exact same shot minus the ambulance with your actor reacting as if they were being hit by the ambulance. Then you need to composite the shots together adding effects Mylenium mentioned earlier to sell the shot. You may have to do some rotoscoping to knock them out of frame completely, but without sophisticated wire rigging or stunt men it is a tough effect to sell. If done right it can look realistic but you may just have to try a few different techniques to get the look that works for you.

If you are using OSX 10.3 or above the HVX200 footage will work natively without any codec installation. If your version of Quicktime is older than version 7, you might run into problems. I’ve had no trouble with HVX200 footage and I’m running Quicktime 7 so that may be your issue. I wouldn’t think if you can view it in FCP you’d be having problems. Try trashing your Quicktime preferences or upgrading your version and see what that does for you. Is your issue an export issue? Will it not play once you’ve exported out from FCP or AE?

Have you tried using the write on effect? You can create a path using your mask tool of the 3d line you wish to create and use the write on effect to paint onto the path you created giving you a bend in your line. If you’re looking for more of a 3d bend you may consider using trapcode 3d stroke. It is similar in that it uses a path created using the mask tool to create a stroke that can appear to be in true 3d space. It has a built in camera or you can use your composition camera to change the position of the stroke.

There’s another way you can go about this…if you have a Photoshop document that has effects that aren’t showing up in AE you don’t have to merge the layers. If you right click on your effect in your Photoshop file and select create layer, it will take the effects you’ve applied to the layer and make them a seperate layer in Photoshop. When you import your Photoshop file into AE, select import as comp and all your layers will show up allowing you to manipulate your effects to your liking. Granted it isn’t exactly like having Photoshop effects in AE, but you can manipulate the effects without chaning the base layer they are affecting.

If you’re leaning towards the PC front hold off for the Intel Conroe chip. Word on the street is it blows the doors off anything AMD has on the market. Apple is supposedly waiting for it to release its tower G5’s. Not saying the G5 will have the Conroe, but you know that rumor mill…always tricky. No word on price but as you know you usually pay for what you get. Conroe is set to release in the next couple months and will have 3 speeds…good, better, and slap yo mamma.

You also could experiment with using Trapcode’s 3D Stroke or Particular. Depends on how realistic you want the ribbon to look. It sure is a lot cheaper than buying Cinema 4D although that is a great app and the intergration with AE is second to none. If you’re an AE buff and you want to learn a true 3D app, then go with Cinema 4D…it rocks.

It will work in any version of photoshop if you make the shadows into a layer. You can committ most filters to their own seperate layer. If you’re using photoshop cs, when you add a drop shadow to a text layer for example you right click on the filter listed in your layers pallete and hit create layer. It will tell you that some effects don’t translate over but shadows will. I personally like to duplicate my layer and fill it with black and add a blur to that. Gives me more control over the appearance I think. Try that.

May 7, 2006 at 11:12 pm in reply to: Get Andrew Kramer’s DVD Serious Efffects & Compositing…it’s the bee’s kneesI have been using it in both 6.5 and 7 since I have different versions for MAC and Windows. I haven’t had any problems applying the tips to anything I’ve done. Like epontius said…you build everything from scratch so if you know where to find everything he’s talking about whether it is filters or presets, then you’re good. Nothing from it is specific to 7 only.

May 5, 2006 at 2:09 pm in reply to: CREATIVE COW Master Series After Effects Training DVD Shipping Today!I wasn’t at NAB and I just got my DVD in the mail yesterday…two words, nice. Everything Andrew said about it was spot on…informative and entertaining. It was so easy to follow and understand. I am no AE pro, but I felt like I could apply every technique in some shape or form in my every day projects as well as personal things I hope to do in the future. Well worth the money. If you want to learn a lot of cool techniques and tricks then check out this DVD. Rock on Andrew!!!
