Activity Forums Adobe After Effects 3D Ribbon

I would like to wrap a ribbon that flows up and around a bottle; much like the text ribbon wrapping around a person in Dave Langley’s tutorial. I’m not sure how to substitute the text with a solid surfaced ribbon. Relatively detailed replies would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

The idea is to do something like the ribbon that flows around the shoe at the end of this ad.

    select “Work”

scroll down till you see the second Nike heading. The project title is called “lebron”

    Thanks again.

there have been tons and tons of questions about creating ribbons on this forum, if you use the search, you will find some answers.

Most people agree though, that in AE’s 3d world you can only go so far untill you really need a dedicated 3D animation app like cinema 4D (and someone who knows how to work with it)

C4D or Maya. Which would be recomended as the better application to learn?

This is due to the fact that AE dosn’t have a true 3d enviroment, after effects actually works in aa 2.5 dimentional space…Just a part of the owoner full ocean of Ae we are swimming in …

Well, if it’s ribbons you seek, It’s a huge pain in Maya by using birails. In C4D, it’s as simple as animating the ‘growth’ parameter on the sweep nurbs.

If you’re happy with the look of David Langley’s tutorial, I’d just substitute a WIngding-style font using a solid square character, pulled titghtly enough together to appear as a continuous solid.

You also could experiment with using Trapcode’s 3D Stroke or Particular. Depends on how realistic you want the ribbon to look. It sure is a lot cheaper than buying Cinema 4D although that is a great app and the intergration with AE is second to none. If you’re an AE buff and you want to learn a true 3D app, then go with Cinema 4D…it rocks.
