map animation
Posted by Steven Tader on July 28, 2006 at 7:26 pmwhats the best way to create a map animation where the map tilts back on the x axis and there are lines arching from one point to another in 3d space? i am having trouble bendind the lines in 3d. i am just using solids with linear wipes, but the bending has got me stuck. Thanks!

July 28, 2006 at 8:02 pmHave you tried using the write on effect? You can create a path using your mask tool of the 3d line you wish to create and use the write on effect to paint onto the path you created giving you a bend in your line. If you’re looking for more of a 3d bend you may consider using trapcode 3d stroke. It is similar in that it uses a path created using the mask tool to create a stroke that can appear to be in true 3d space. It has a built in camera or you can use your composition camera to change the position of the stroke.

July 28, 2006 at 8:44 pmHave you tried applying a curved (open) mask to a 3D solid, then applying the stroke effect to the masked solid? You can then animate the start and/or end point of the stroke effect.

July 28, 2006 at 8:52 pmhow do you create a curved mask on a 3d layer? that is pretty much what i was wanting to do. i was just going to scale and position it manually, but is there a better way to animate the start and end points?

July 28, 2006 at 9:15 pmHmm …
1. create a solid.
2. draw a mask: two points, making an arch. A bezier curve.
3. Apply effect>render (or generate)>stroke
4. Set the stroke’s paint style to “on transparent” so you see only the stroke and not the solid.
5. Make the solid 3D.Now the stroke will only lie in the plane of the solid, so you need to rotate it where you want it. And all strokes applied to that solid will be in the same plane as the solid.
To animate the “write-on” of the stroke, animate its end point (in the effect controls) from 0 to 100, leaving its start point at 0.
