If you wish to try some mocap software before you buy the Pixel Corps has a sweet deal going on this summer. You can join for $50 for the entire summer and this gives you access to thousands of dollars in software that you can download and authorize from them. It can’t be used for commercial purposes but you can watch tutorials and learn how to use it and make sure it works before you invest any money in anything. There are plenty of forums where you have access to tons of industry professionals (like the COW) that will be glad to help you and answer questions. Like I said though, it isn’t free but for the software you get access to it is worth it.

In particle illusion they have a few preset particle effects that simulate bullets breaking through glass.

Have you ever seen the film Waking Life? There is an interesting tidbit about people being able to solve problems because they’ve already been solved. You can latch on to the information because it is floating around like radio waves. Your brain acts as an antenna and pulls down someone else’s thoughts. I thought it was a very interesting concept. It does feel good though when you solve a problem on your own. When you can’t however, you come to the COW to help further you on your quest for knowledge. Onward After Effects soldier!!!

Make sure you have the caps lock key engaged when rendering. I know it is simple and may not solve buffer overflow issues but you would be surprised on how much it helps to relieve processing power. Could also try rendering in blocks of say 5 sec intervals and then piece them together in a non-linear editor.

Instead of exporting in the Animation codec…try the None setting or do a PNG image sequence. Only fault of PNG sequence is you have to export sound separate. Also, I’ve seen no distinguishable difference between the totally uncompressed files (None setting) and the PNG sequence. In fact the sequence is usually less than half the size of the Quicktime movie.

Not a problem Andrew. I am a firm believer in what you do and what the cow does. All of us at one time or another started out knowing nothing and I believe sharing knowledge is the cornerstone of this business. The work you do has made me a better graphic designer and I can’t thank you enough for that. Keep up the good work and everyone else reading this go get Riot Gear!!! Great name by the way too.

October 5, 2006 at 2:38 pm in reply to: Footage shot on HVX200 once imported into AE7 looks horribleWell, I tried that as well and still get the same results once exporting or bringing it down in the timeline. When I do the DV Pulldown it removes some interlacing artifacts bc there is no pulldown removal setting on the DV50. It has 24P but no advanced pulldown. I will give that another whirl but once I go to timeline or export I still run into the same problems. Thanks though.

September 11, 2006 at 1:17 pm in reply to: Final Cut Not Interpreting HVX200 footage properlyI just shot regular 24p so that makes sense. I will try the 24pA and see how that turns out. Thanks for your help guys.

Actually if you load a graphic into After Effects and select it in your time line and hit apple+E on a mac and ctrl+E on windows it will open the graphic in the application it was created in and once you change and save it and return to AE it will be automatically updated for you. Be careful though…if it is a jpeg file or some other format than photoshop or illustrator it may open some other program in which case you have to designate on your computer what program opens what file by default. There’s a nifty tutorial on this on the creative cow after effects podcast that was just released actually.
