When I import a graphic into After Effects, if I update that graphic in Photoshop, will it automatically update the reference in After Effects? I don’t see it happening so I wonder if there is a toggle for this…

I’ve never tried this but I think you can right click on it in the project window and click “reload footage.” I’m not sure though and don’t have AE here to check.

Actually if you load a graphic into After Effects and select it in your time line and hit apple+E on a mac and ctrl+E on windows it will open the graphic in the application it was created in and once you change and save it and return to AE it will be automatically updated for you. Be careful though…if it is a jpeg file or some other format than photoshop or illustrator it may open some other program in which case you have to designate on your computer what program opens what file by default. There’s a nifty tutorial on this on the creative cow after effects podcast that was just released actually.

Sure, as long as you don’t change the number of layers or the layer names. Otherwise you have to re-import the PSD as a comp and replace each layer manually, or just import the new layers.

Of course, if you wanted to import a flattened PSD (no layers), then just go ahead.

If all else fails, do what I do : Close your project and re-open it.

Yep, that is what I did. Closed and reopened. Thanks all.

[Palak Biswas] “o there is no option other than importing new comp…”

You could import the new individual layers and place them in your PSD comp manually.
