I’m very experienced with AVID and AE, but I am very green when it comes to the HVX200 and Final Cut. In a nutshell, the footage shot on the HVX that has been converted for our PC-based AE7 system looks sub par. The “raw” files look good, so my guess is that something is being done incorrectly between the MXR files and the Animation codec quicktimes exported from FCP.

Does anyone know of a website or tutorial that has step-by-step instructions on proper settings in the FCP system to create the highest quality Quicktime that can be used in AE7 (XP platform). I have been searching online for days but I can’t seem to find exactly what I need. Thanks everyone!

Instead of exporting in the Animation codec…try the None setting or do a PNG image sequence. Only fault of PNG sequence is you have to export sound separate. Also, I’ve seen no distinguishable difference between the totally uncompressed files (None setting) and the PNG sequence. In fact the sequence is usually less than half the size of the Quicktime movie.

Have you tried exporting your footage from FCP with the ‘Make Movie Self-Contained’ box unchecked? This will create a reference file to the original footage in FCP. No compression required.

You can find the box I speak of under ‘File’ -> ‘Export’ -> ‘Quicktime Movie’. Its at the very bottom of the dialogue window.

If your footage doesn’t look any better, chances are the problem’s not with After Effects. It either has something to do with your capture or sequence settings in FCP, or something to do with your camera.

    Hope that helps.

are you using a easy setup in fcp for the dvcpro that you are shooting at? i’ve shot some hd on an hvx to p2 and had no problems importing the mxf files using the dvcprohd setup that cooresponded to the settings of my shoot (720 60p).

also at import of the p2 files, fcp transcodes the mxf to mov files in the capture scratch location of the fcp project. you can pull those directly into ae, without exporting or converting any further. it may simplify your workflow.
