Hmm. I think you’ll be right with a Mac or PC, they are hot property at the right price.
Flip a coin. 🙂

Are you certain the work area bar is not shorter than the entire edited timeline?

It aint sexy but you can select all in the AE comp and copy then go back to PPro timeline and paste the clips back into a PPro timeline, but you will get each shot stacked like in an AE comp. Other wise try to export the comp to a PPro project and then import the ppro project into the project you are working in. 🙂

Hi Vince,
I have to chimne in here and state that I have both PC and Macbook pro laptops. The Macbook pro can get rediculously hot and when running win7 via bootcamp and then in OSX (yes I have Master collection across both platforms) got so hot it froze in the middle of a live feed capture via OnLocation and I had to recapture the tape later which blew out the very tight budget for this client.
Personally I wouldn’t recommend apple gear as being any better than PC. In fact my ASUS PC laptop has never crashed/frozen like my 15″ unibody MBP which has not got enough ventilation IMHO. (there is no fan!).
My rule of thumb is treat a laptop as a laptop not a proper work station they shouldn’t be used as a replacement. Be aware of heat, but get something that suits your needs as fast as you can afford and with a 7200rpm internal drive, but don’t look at anything less than a Gaming Laptop, as they are stressed to the hilt for gaming. I know NLE is a different type of stress, but anything that is not gaming is not stressed in any capacity near the gaming.
The problem with using the stress application (which i used something similar when overclocking older desktops) is that you have purchased the machine in order to install it and run it. Unless there is some thing technically wrong with the laptop the retailer will not accept a return. And the manufacturer won’t touch you either.
AMD chipsets are also another issue in themselves. My experience with them is that they run HOT. that was what separated them to the intel chipeset and made them a popular choice for servers they can technically still run hotter before the OS or BIOS knocks them out. If they are running so hot and the space they are in is not temperature contolled (ie: hot summers day no air con then it could get so hot in laptop that may have slightly confined space for ventilation, fan, suction that the internal heat could melt the soldering. That said I only use Intel chipset desktops and laptops and recommend it that way to those that ask me.
I don’t’ mean to be disrespectful in any way Vince just that I thought another cow leader should forward some experience that suggests a slightly different perspective.
I think everyone should stop trying to find a CS5 workstation laptop and just wait until the technology is officially supported in that format and let it go. So hard as we are so close to having the power in a back pack, but we aren’t quite there yet.

Instead of EDL try AAF export. Might keep most of the scaling and effects? Have to test first.

The frame size is critical.
NTSC can be 720×480 or 720×486.
These 6 lines can make a huge difference, make sure there is a line for line or pixel perfect dimension match across the entire workflow.
With CS4 and above the new PAR will never go back to previous PAR of CS3 products and below.
The way around this is to work at the ascpect ratio that suits the visual composition (widescreen) and then export or switch Photoshop to a square pixel PAR. Then let the program import assets as square PAR and manually correct the PAR in the NLE.
Quality should be maintained because the pixel dimensions are never different just the stretch at the end of the line, which can never be avoided that is just how SD formats work.– Jon Barrie

If your system is not too under=par you should be able to edit with the 7D footage directly without the Cineform conversion. I would think the cineform plugin is causing the instability not CS5 itself. I have a Canon 550D (t2i) and that is using the same video specs as the 7D. I have had a great time cutting it on my macbook pro C2D 2.66 4G ram. CS4 was no good for editing the native files, but CS5 eats it up.

For smooth HD video playback you want the BM disk utility to show your drive able to sustain at least 40fps preferably higher (60-75) and that goes for both read and write. This can only be achieved through RAID 0 or RAID 5 with fast SATA II series HDD Arrays.

I think we are all a little confused by your post details. CS4 uses the original BPAV folder structure to work with the recorded video footage as it was recorded to the cards.
FCP is only required if the XDCAM footage was transferred with FCP and the files are no longer in the original BPAV folder structure and only are Quicktime movies files with the Apple Intermediate codec for HDV. Even then there are plugins you can purchase to run them without FCP installed.
Sadly FCP and apple don’t like to play nice with other NLEs. AIC codecs are FCP only, unless you get a third party codec plugin that can read them without FCP.
If you have the original BPAV folder structures for the recordings try navigating to them via the Media Browser. It should see the video files within the structure and just show you the clip thumbnails. Drag n Drop them into the Project panel to start using them.

HDV uses and equivalent Data rate to DVCAM so the file size should be equivalent. You will need to cut from an external storage drive and not the laptops internal hard drive. The compression to fit all that data into such a small data rate requries some decent processing. Same drive for the OS, Apps and HDV is never a recommended workflow. A single 25Gig file means the computer needs to see the entire file while you make decisions on shots which is going to kill your processor and hard drive especially on a Laptop.
Move the files to an external USB2 drive minimum, a Firewire drive would be good, a firewire 800 would be great. Keeping the files in their original format and not converted or captured with FCP as that will use an AIC (PPro captures in the original HDV MPEG-2 compression and data rate as recorded so there is no loss of quality).
Good luck,
Jon
