Problems pausing timeline playback
I am currently using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 to edit a music video shot on the 7D (files converted using Cineform). Numerous times when I have attempted to play the timeline, pausing playback becomes impossible. The timeline’s picture will freeze, but the audio will play all the way to the end of the timeline and as soon as it does, it crashes Premiere.
I had a similar problem with CS4 a while back, and it had to do with a faulty sound card in my machine. I know that’s not the issue now but I do have a feeling it has something to do with the asio settings or some other audio settings in CS5. Has anyone else had this problem?? It’s crashing so often I can’t finish this video till I resolve the issue. Thanks!

If your system is not too under=par you should be able to edit with the 7D footage directly without the Cineform conversion. I would think the cineform plugin is causing the instability not CS5 itself. I have a Canon 550D (t2i) and that is using the same video specs as the 7D. I have had a great time cutting it on my macbook pro C2D 2.66 4G ram. CS4 was no good for editing the native files, but CS5 eats it up.

I have the exact same problem right now. I do notice it happens on parts where I have heavy grading using Magic Bullet Looks 1.4. If I turn off the grading effects the playback will not crash.
Open a support case with CineForm which I’ve done too. Instead of playing back, use Adobe Media Encoder and encode your project. It should fail at a certain point and email them your error code. Here is the error I get. Can you post your error too?

Yes, I have come to a similar conclusion about Magic Bullet Looks 1.4. Do you use an ATI graphics card? I was able to speak with Red Giant, and they told me that it was probably a combination of my graphics card, CS5, and Looks that was the problem. They offered no solutions.

I have a nvidia geforce gtx 275. I believe it’s a problem with cineform. If you see look at the error closely it’s coming from cineform decoder. Also I have no problems grading other codecs with MBL. Please open a case with cineform so hopefully they make it a priority since the issue seems to replicable. My case is still pending a resolution.

I’ve done more testing without using Magic Bullet Looks. I’m only doing some effects within CS5, specifically a gradient type effect, and I get the same error when applying it. If the effect is turned off there is no problem.
I think the issue is when a gradient type effect or vignette is applied. It consitently happens to me.
If you want to replicate this yourself this is what you can do in CS5:
1) add a video effect – Generate – Circle
2) blending mode shoudl be NORMAL
3) set it to “invert circle”
4) set the Color to black
5) set opacity to 50%
6) apply a large radius
7) set the feather to a larger amount so there is a nice gradient effectThis creates a vignette effect and should have a nice gradient to black. I’ve applied the exact same effect to any other codec and i have no problems, only CineForm codec errors on me. I have no other effects but this gradient effect.
Still no work around for me. How have you worked around the issue? If it doesn’t get resolved soon I’m going to have to deal with very large mezzanine files in MPEG2 or something stable.

I have been using raw .mov’s straight out of the 7D. For some reason they need to reconform constantly, which is a bit of a slowdown, but they take color/gradient effects ok. I am still dealing with very frequent crashes however. So there’s no real solution I have found!

Just tried with the new CHFD_AVI_Importer.prm and it worked like a charm! I’m able to stick to my original workflow now. I’ve tested MBL on the native h264 vs cineform and I can tell realtime the processing with be much smoother with CineForm. Hope this helps you Cassandra.
