There is no other way for this (16:9) to happen other than it was accidentally selected as the sequence format. Make a new sequence using the correct seq settings and then copy all the clips from the 16:9 seq and paste them into the new 4:3 seq.
Bitter pill to swallow but it has been a human clicking errror not the software. 😉

Final Cut Pro can and has done so since it first introduced the HDV capture into it’s system some years ago. FCP does not show all frames on screen during capture which is how it shows all captures which i think has something to do with less stress on system equating to minimal dropped frames while still visually showing where the capture process is up to.
I personally don’t think you need to see the capture as it happens, but it doesn’t feel pro when a third party app can do it.
BTW FCP doesn’t indicate a running timecode during capture which always felt really un pro to me. I want to see where the tape is based on the running timecode and see how much longer it will take so I can coordinate my coffee/lunch times.

Ctrl/cmd + K only works in the timeline with an active selected track (highlighted tracks are lighter in shade than unselected) the cut will occur through a clip at the point the playhead or (CTI) is positioned.
Insert (, )and overlay (.) shortcut keys add a clip to the timeline via the same principal of a selected track. The bottom most track is where it will fall. The shortcut keys are part of the source monitor panel tool box not the editing tool box. Hover the mouse arrow over the buttons in the source panel to reveal the button name and the shortcut key for it.
Look up insert edit and overlay edit for more detail in the online premiere pro help documents if my description is a little hairy. Always helps to see it rather than read it.

There is a mismatch of frame size properties between what you are editing with and then using for preview. DV is limited to SD frame dimensions and will render and display a “zoomed” look when used to preview in a HD timeline.
Swap the codec to something else other than DV. Keep in mind that preview is not export format or result. DV on export will not look like the preview while editing (unless you tick then use preview box in export settings window).

I am sorry to hear you are having these problems. I don’t think having a Mac or FCP would make your situation any easier. Both programs are professional and require training to learn about TV/DVD/HD/SD/DV specs and formats. FCP is just as technical and requires just as much education to use as Adpbe products.
PPro and Encore work very well together and is actually a very streamlined process to make an Authored DVD compared to other professional systems. Bottom line is this forum is for trouble shooting and not a replacement for taking a course or learning through the Teach yourself books out there.
Hiring an Adobe Educator will be money well spent. There is too much information required to understand basic editing and posts here won’t go into that length detail. There is help online and the instruction manuals are on line too. (Printing and shipping the weight is wasteful these days). F1 is the shortcut key to help in any Adobe Application.
From your workflow description you need to read up on NTSC PAL formats and staying in the same region format, capturing, HDV/DV workflows, basic editing in PPro. DVD formats (NTSC PAL), Authoring basics for DVD with Encore and Dynamic linking PPro to Encore. How to test the Author without burning discs, burning a final disc.
It sounds like a lot and it is when written up, even in point form without any details. Which is probably why no-one has helped you in the capacity you would have hoped. There is just too much ground to cover. Adobe have their own instructional books sold in book stores that will show you all this stuff I used them years ago to wrap my head around both PPro, After Effects and FCP workflows.
I hope I haven’t come across negatively to your situation, I do understand the frustration you are experiencing. I do hope I have given enough details showing how a simple thing like making a DVD is actually not simple to just do without the knowledge. Once the knowledge is there it is simple and a basic DVD can be put together in a matter of minutes.

The process of separated video and audio is standard practice for DVD authoring assets in mpeg-2 formats. Mpeg files files with embedded audio is called muxed audio and is an option you need to select. CS4 did have some issues with mixed mpeg2 files importing to encore with extra long audio. Using “send to encore” using dynamic link from ppro is the quickest way to get timelines with audio chapter points etc into encore.

I wasn’t trying to suggest that other cards won’t work with cs5. I was concerned that the cuda message may confuse some people into expecting mercury support with any cuda card.
ATi cards are supported to run cs5 but thy don’t and probably won’t have mercury support because the architecture thus far is nvidia cuda based. Who knows about cs(next) there may be ati support too.
Cs5 does not require a cuda or nvidia card to run. Nvidia cards do seem to have less driver issues than Ati cards with adobe products.
For the record:
ati cards will run cs5 products. Nvidia cards with and without cuda will run cs5. Both have listed minimum specs and models on the adobe production premium website. Check to see a card you are using or want to purchase is on the list.
if you want mercury playback support then the there is currently a short list of nvidia series cards only. Mercury engine is not supported with any other card maker or models other than the listed cards on the adobe site. There is likely to be more cards supported as updates roll out. But there are no guarantees. If you want mercury playback now refer to the short list on adobe site. If you just want to use cs5 and aren’t looking for mercury engine support there is a listing of ati and nvidia cards too.It seems complex and I think the game changing abilities of mercury engine I exciting non users to switch. I just don’t want to see systems being built and not having the mercury supported cards when the builder expected to get it because they bought a cuda card.

There appears to be a lot of chatter about cuda and mercury on the cow ATM. Please be aware that cuda cards are not necessarily mercury cards. Mercury is different to cuda and not te same thing. Mercury engine only works on a limited amount if cards right now.

Quadro FX 3800 (Windows)
Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro FX 5800 (Windows)
Quadro CXthese are the only cards that are mercury supported. There are other cuda cards outside this list. All Cuda cards will see some benefits in cs5 and cs4. But for mercury engine in cs5 you must have one of the listed cards.

Mp3 audio files can have problems. Some systems are sensitive to using some audio filters.
1st try converting any audio files that aren’t WAV into uncompressed WAV. And replace them in timeline.
2nd Try exporting just te section with replaced wav audio.
3rd identify any clips with audio filters on them and turn them off.
I’m hoping you don’t need to get to 3. But let us know.
