After all these time, Adobe still is unable to preview capture on the fly? (i.e. it shows on the HDV cam, not on the screen)??? Why??? May be I am just not doing things right. Anyone knows?

    Sincerely,
    Perry

No preview but you do have scene detection now.

Yeah, what’s up with that? HDVSplit has been out and stuck on Beta and no further improvement. Why a freeware can do a “pro” where can’t? Come on…

The capture preview is disabled to avoid dropping frames. This can probably change now that most computers are powerful, but does it really make the app not pro? What other apps can preview HDV while capturing? HDV over firewire, I mean, not over HD-SDI or component 🙂

Final Cut Pro can and has done so since it first introduced the HDV capture into it’s system some years ago. FCP does not show all frames on screen during capture which is how it shows all captures which i think has something to do with less stress on system equating to minimal dropped frames while still visually showing where the capture process is up to.

I personally don’t think you need to see the capture as it happens, but it doesn’t feel pro when a third party app can do it.

BTW FCP doesn’t indicate a running timecode during capture which always felt really un pro to me. I want to see where the tape is based on the running timecode and see how much longer it will take so I can coordinate my coffee/lunch times.

    Tracy,
As I mentioned, HDVSplit is a freeware. Yes, via firewire. Thanks Jon, I agree with you.

BTW, anyone know if a notebook or netbook does not have a firewire port, how can one use Onlocation? Is there a USB to firewire type of device that will allow use of onlocation with DV cam?

    Sincerely,
    Perry

Ok, cool, sounds like the solution is to use FCP and HDVSplit.

Or, you can use actual pro formats, not HDV (which I’ve heard is pro-sumer) :).

I do remember now that FCP can do preview while capturing, I didn’t know HDVSplit was a capture app.

I just don’t know why this is a pro/not pro deal breaker. Again, HDV over firewire isn’t what I’d call a pro format to start with. When I capture via HD-SDI to premiere using an HDCAM deck, it previews fine. Same with anything I capture using HD-SDI, including from cameras that initially recorded to HDV.

Maybe if you suggested it as a feature it wouldn’t vex me so.

    Tracy,
I am sorry, yes, I should really not say this feature is a pro thing. I am very much a prosumer, not a professional by any stretch of imagination. Thanks for clarifying that. Well, come to think of it, I may not even be a prosumer. Haha… 🙂

    Best wish,
    Perry

You can force Premiere to show the capture window by installing FFDSHOW.
    Works with my Sony HVR1500.
