Have you tested the DVD on a TV? that might not look so bad there. Unless your aim is to watch it on a computer monitor. I’m thinking you are using a DV based avi file which will lose colour and brightness info, making it softer – part of the compression. I suggest you set the timeline to delete the rendered sequence and re-export from that.
Or make an Uncompressed AVI for Encore to encode.
Have you done much colour correction, or other filters on the video?

Could you have accidentally switched off the eye on the video layer? (Left of the layer track name)

Try using the 3 way color corrector. or levels or curves.
If you have white clipping (something is so bright its white) then its clipped to that color. there is no more information there. you could color correct all day and never see more detail.

If they keep trying to save the DV clip over its crashed version it might keep crashing. Is it a DV avi or DV mov. AVI should be working. MOV might not if they have the latest version of QT. (7.4.1) there is an error crashing exports from Adobe software (PPro+AE).
Export the DV AVI to another location. Otherwise they will have to reinstall the software. It sounds corrupted. DV AVI should be set properly to the standard theya re working in. Default settings for DV export is 24PA not the setting your project is.
Should still export anyway.

If you are using the Multi-bridge why don’t you use that to work in native avi versions of the clips?
You want have the extreme softening with added effects as you would with mpeg2 based HDV format.

Is there a reason you can’t import the original clip into After Effects?
Your clip quality is only as good as its original digitized format. If it’s DV or HDV you won’t get a better quality by exporting it to uncompressed. It will just be a larger file with the same pixel info.
Key it with Keylight. check the adobe video tutorials on how to use it.

Just keep using the presets. They are designed to keep your workflow in it’s native pixel and aspect ratio format.
Sq pixel PAL SD res is 1024×576 NTSC is 864×486 and both HD is 1280×720 & 1920×1080.
Keep using the presets they are right.
