  • Working with 16:9 widescreen with PremiereProCS3.

    Hi there guys, I was wondering if someone could explain what I’m doing wrong with the widescreen PAL preset in PremiereProCS3.

    I’ve got my footage, which has been recorded on a Sony DSR300 in 16:9mode (not ture 16:9 i know, but its all I got :P) and whenever I try to import it to PremierePro I have to choose a ‘Frame size: 720h 576v (1.422)’. Now, in Premiere Pro’s windows, it appears just perfect, but when I export it and open it in AfterEffects it just isn’t 16:9 but 4:3 and squished.

    I’m sorry I’ve not typed this brillaintly, but I hope you can understand and help.

    thanks;

    Hi Dave,
    there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. This is what happens to DV and even 1080 HDV widescreen. It’s anamorphic not true 16×9.
    You can change the interpret setting in AE by right clicking the clip in the project panel and interpret footage.
    Set the PAR (pixel aspect ratio) like PPro it will adjust it and all instances of it in timelines/comps used.
    If you want to make it 16×9 sq pixel you need to force that on export. But I wouldn’t bother.

    Hi jon, thanks for the reply. Sorry to ask another rather beginners question, but what size do I want my composistions and projects in Premiere and AE to be then, for 16:9 PAL?

    thank you;

    Just keep using the presets. They are designed to keep your workflow in it’s native pixel and aspect ratio format.
    Sq pixel PAL SD res is 1024×576 NTSC is 864×486 and both HD is 1280×720 & 1920×1080.
    Keep using the presets they are right.
