Ed, There is no manual on-line yet. I assume as May 11th gets closer Sony will put more up about it.

It sounds like the Match Media settings might be throwing things off. If I understand you correctly you do not want to match the media. You want 4:3 media in a 16:9 project (which does not match). In that case, create the project using the PAL DV Widescreen template and render using the PAL DV Widescreen template and your 4:3 media should stay as a center cut with black pillar boxes on the sides.

That is a problem. Frame Size: 720 x 480 and Pixel Aspect Ratio: 0.9091 is NOT 16:9 it’s 4:3. If Vegas thinks the media is 16:9 then you must change this in the media properties to the correct aspect.

I would set the project to 720×405 PAR 1.000, progressive. The first 4 will match perfectly. Bring the last file in and make sure Vegas recognizes it as 4:3. Then open Pan/Crop on the last file and right-click and select Match Output Aspect. This will add a crop that will match the rest of the media. Yes, it will be zoomed in because the video is not wide enough but that’s the only option if you want them all 16:9.

Don’t forget to add the TV Simulator effect that is built into Vegas. This will really sell that it’s a TV monitor with interlacing lines and everything.

What is your final output format? I would start a project that matches the output format that you want the final footage. Then add the other footage and crop as necessary if needed. The first 4 are 16:9 and the last is 4:3 DV. Depending out your output, you may want to use DV Widescreen.

It seems odd that it would render fine for a while and then freeze. I assume the file plays back fine on the timeline? Make sure your version of Vegas is at the latest update level (you didn’t say what version you were using). I assume you are capturing to WMV format? Can the Dazzle capture to AVI? Perhaps DV or MJPEG? You may have to re-encode these files to a format that is friendlier to edit with Vegas (just thinking out loud here).

It would be… -20dB because the Vegas meters are digital.
If the quiet parts in your program are too low at that level, one thing you can do is put Wave Hammer Surround on the final output and set the Output Level on the Volume Maximizer tab to -20dB to ensure that you don’t go over. Then you can play with the Threshold to make it sound louder and still maintain the -20 dB level.

What camera and what makes you think it’s progressive already? It sure looks like interlace artifacts to me. Explain your workflow starting with your camera and ending with the render including project properties, etc. so we can figure out if interlacing is inadvertently being injected into your workflow.

Boris FX has a light wrap in their chroma key tools. It’s not that expensive and does an outstanding job.

One way would be to make sure that your project is set to DV Widescreen. Then use Pan/Crop on the film media and select Match Output Aspect. This will crop the black bars off and leave you with a widescreen video. If you still want the black bars in the final product, you can render to 4:3 and Movie Studio will add the black bars back again.
