    Hi everyone,
I’m using Vegas movie studio platinum 9, and i’m working on a video which includes video files from a film, which of course has those black bars at the top and bottom. what i want is a way to not apply the editing effects (transitions, fades etc..) on those bars, so that all the editing is done only on the area where the movie is playing, and the black bars would just stay black the whole time.
i’d appreciate it alot if anyone can help.. thank you for your time.

One way would be to make sure that your project is set to DV Widescreen. Then use Pan/Crop on the film media and select Match Output Aspect. This will crop the black bars off and leave you with a widescreen video. If you still want the black bars in the final product, you can render to 4:3 and Movie Studio will add the black bars back again.

A straight forward way you can try is to just edit what you are
editing as if the black bars isnt there….then when you are
finished editing you simply add two video tracks above your
video…there you add a solid black color to each
track and then use the track motion to position them
below and above to equally match the black bars thats already
    on the video…WALLAH

it seems that i didn’t make my project DV widescreen from the start, so sadly John i couldn’t use your method but thanks a lot anyway and i’m sure it’ll will come in handy in the future… the solid black color worked like a charm, thanks a lot Steve, and thank u both for the fast response…
