I have one last questions and that is… what are you trying to do?

If I understand correctly, you have an MPEG file that you got from a Standard Definition DVD which contains interlaced video. You are loading it into a Hi Definition project that is progressive scan. You are then rendering it to a Standard Definition DVD that is interlaced. This flip-flopping between interlaced and progressive is what’s causing your problem. I’m not even sure why you are using HD at all.

My advice is to set your project properties to match both your source footage and output format which is NTSC DV Widescreen. Then edit and render to NTSC DVD Widescreen and everything should look fine. Don’t change any of the default settings for the project or render.

June 23, 2009 at 2:36 pm in reply to: Help with capturing video from S-input

    > But the manufacturer said I might want to be a TV tuner card with S input. So I will still need to feed that signal into Vegas.

Vegas will not capture from a TV tuner card. You will need to use the TV tuner cards software and usually the quality is questionable and not anything you would want to edit and re-render. If this is just for fun and games and quality is not a concern then a TV tuner card might be fine. If you are serious about capturing these tapes with the best quality possible you should look into a Canopus ADVC-110 or ADVC-300. These capture analog video and audio with sync to an AVI file using the DV25 codec via firewire. This will stand up to editing in Vegas and rendering out to DVD.

I share your frustration but I’m guessing that Sony Broadcast makes slightly more money for the company than Sony Media Software and they have to look out for their broadcast interests. I use only Sony cameras which are supported by Vegas so I don’t feel this pain.

As stated above, 3rd part vendors like Raylight have stepped up to filling the gap for Sony and that’s probably the best way to address this issue.

June 23, 2009 at 10:48 am in reply to: Archives .Mod

The real fix here is to not buy a camera that writes to a proprietary format. I had read somewhere that .mod files are just mpeg files so you might try renaming them to .mpg and see if that helps. I would be asking Canon these questions as they are the ones that produced the odd-ball format. Canon should have given you a program to deal with this problem.

This is a new feature of Vegas Pro 9.0 to keep the frame rate up if your computer cannot keep up with real-time preview. As you have seen, you can turn off by right-clicking on the preview window and deselect Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback.

    > The project is to be rendered as MP4 & DVD.

When rendering for multiple output formats I like to keep my project properties in format of the source video. When rendering for a specific format I will make my project match that output format. There are pros and cons to each. You have to find what works best for you.

    > Will there be any difference in rendered quality?

No, there should be no difference in the rendered quality. You are still rendering from HD source. The only difference will be in how the aspect ratio between HD widescreen and PAL widescreen are handled.

June 23, 2009 at 10:32 am in reply to: infinicam and vegas 8 – making picture changes

You need to use Ripple Edit (Ctrl+L) with the option to move all affected markers. You have to use the Ripple Edit Icon on the toolbar to set the mode initially. Turn Ripple Edit on before you make a cut and everything to the right, including the markers, will ripple left. Then turn Ripple Edit off because you don’t want this behavior all the time. If you forget to use Ripple Edit, you can still press Ctrl+F immediately after and edit to do a Post Ripple Edit.

    Hope this helps,

If you are only delivering in one format (DVD PAL) then I would set my project to match my output format so that there are no surprises when you render. Otherwise you will see various forms of black bars where the two formats do not match aspect.

You can try an equalizer to boost the voice frequencies but if there are instruments in the same frequency they will be boosted too. This is kind of like trying to remove the eggs from a cake once it’s baked… you really can’t.
