There are a lot of variables, so I don’t think a chart would really be feasible,
Version of MC, number of CPU cores, CPU speed, disk speed. GPU is irrelevant.
The most recent versions of MC will utilize CPU cores more effectively in transcoding. Using slower disk interfaces, like FW800 or USB2 will cause a bottleneck.

I don’t think this is too surprising…you can’t really get Adobe CS 5 or FCP 7 anymore, either.
Will your assistant need to open sequences that contain features added in v7 and above? The bins should work fine, as should sequences that use long standing standard features.

As a troubleshooting step, copy one of the files to your desktop and try to Import it. do you get the same error?

The alpha channel would be for something created in a graphics program intended to be superimposed over other video. The alpha channel cuts out the background. (This is a very simple explanation…you can do more complex stuff, but it doesn’t seem relevant here). Sounds like you are not doing that, so you don’t need it.
For your case, Pro Res 4444 would actually be of benefit. Dave assumed you were like many people who post, who shot something with a DSLR camera (or something much worse), which is already highly compressed and would not magically improve in quality just by converting it to Pro Res 4444…only bloat the file size.

I guess the million dollar question is whether his hand gestures go in front of the URL or not…looks like thats the case, which makes it far more challenging. You are looking at doing a fair amount of roto work in after effects, at minimum.

Premiere has two audio mixers, one is track based and one is clip based.
Is it possible you are adjusting the track based one by mistake and later on in the track undoing what you did (which will happen if you don’t keyframe)
Use the clip mixer to adjust levels on individual clips

If you relink the master clip to the transcoded file, using the relink dialog, does the group clip update and link to it as well?

This is totally normal. Pan the track in the timeline all the way left or right. If you leave it centered it will be louder by 6db

You can’t add a new angle to an already existing group clip in Avid. Hopefully, this feature will be added. Avid group clips are rock solid and have been for a long time, while other NLEs have struggled to get multicam working at all…but they have now fallen behind the competiton as far as features are concerned.
