Use the QuickTime 7 installer that’s on the FInal Cut Studio install discs. This one is smart enough to install it in the Utilitiles folder and not the Applications folder, where the QuickTime X player already lives.
If that fails, try hiding the QuickTime X player within a folder temporarily.
QTX Player does not support reference files, as you have seen.

May I ask what might go wrong if you do it with MC running? I’ve been doing it for years…what bullet have I dodged?

Actually QuickTime Pro (not QuickTime X) can do it too Not sure you can still get it easily.

Try rendering the color correction first, then apply the filter, then render again.

Nitris DX is not supported by Avid with an a expansion chassis and thunderbolt adapter. They say it may work under some conditions, but not reliably enough to be approved. The official word is that the Nitris DX should not be used with the new MacPro, and they have no plans to redesign it to become more compatible.

Take the tape to a dub house and have it dubbed to another tape with continuous timecode and at 48k audio.
It will be a bit tricky, as if you just do straight FireWire dub, it will just copy the data in the tape as is , problems and all.
If you have a capture card, such as a Decklink or AJA Kona, that has analog connections, you might try to capture analog as a non-controllable device. You won’t be able to recapture the material again at a later date, though if you do it that way.

Just go to Avid’s website and buy it online. Nobody really sells it any cheaper.
BTW….Avid just introduced Media Composer 8, which currently is pretty much the same as MC7, except their business model has changed…and it may help you here. You can now subscribe month to month for a very reasonable price. Since you are not an editor, you may find it makes sense to rent and not own. If not, you still have the option to buy.

It’s possible the audio on the tape is recorded in 12 bit 32k. Some mini DV cameras can record that way, but It can cause problems as NLEs prefer 48k.
Try changing your Audio Project settings to 32k. Then try capturing again.
If you can successfully capture…when you finish capturing, change it back to 48k. Then use the “change sample rate” function to convert the audio in the clips to 48k.
