Seems to be some kind of Quicktime metadata bug. Cinema Tools seems to fix it.

The viewer and canvas do not show the video at full resolution. You can minimize the distortion by setting them to display at 100%….but the preferred way to view your image is on an external NTSC monitor.

Using the old Avid trick of narrowing down the timeline, I found that the presence of a number of clips in the opening tease caused the export to be done at 1920 x 1080 instead of 1280 x 1080. The crazy thing is all the footage reads in the browser as DVCPRO HD 1280 x 1080….there is no Uncompressed HD footage in the project.
Adding the Broadcast safe filter to the entire tease and forcing a render causes the export to be done correctly, as the sequence now refers to render file instead of the original footage…which must have some weird header corruption.

Not using Pro Res. (can’t use Pro Res at all, even for playback, on my ancient Dual 2GHZ G5) 🙂

Havent tried this in FCP 6…but awhile back I did it in FCP 5.x and it was no problem at all.

If you are in a time crunch, you can temporarily remove the shift field filter from your plugins folder and your timeline will play back normally.

If you are using Compressor 3, its easy.
Just drag the setting for DVCPRO HD from Advanced Format Conversions to your clip in the batch window. Then in the Geometry tab of the Inspector, select 4:3 in the Output Image Inset (padding) inset section.
I don’t think you can do it properly with earlier versions of Compressor. I used to use AE for this, but Compressor 3 does it nicely.

Once again, OMF files exported from FCP cannot be read by Avids. They will only work in Digital Audio Workstations.
You need the Automatic Duck Plugin, where you can select “Avid Compatibility Mode” in order to do this.
Automatic Duck has a forum on the Cow. Wes Plate, the author of the plug is the moderator and can answer any question you might have about this.
