Self Contained Quicktime-DVCPROHD 1080i question
I need to export some self contained Quicktimes for playback on another Kona 3 system.
I’ve noticed that exporting a self contained Quicktime of a 1080i DVCPRO-HD sequence results in a full raster frame size of 1920 x 1080 with square pixels, rather than the normal DVCPRO HD anamorphic frame size of 1280 x 1080, even though its still in the DVCPRO HD codec. If you place this Quicktime in a Kona DVCPRO HD Sequence you will have to render it, as it is the wrong frame size. (You can modify the sequence settings to 1280 x 1080 square, and not render, but if you have to mix with an existing sequence, its a problem).
If I export using Quicktime Conversion and the Apple DVCPRO-HD 1080 preset, it stays 1280 x 1080…though it takes much longer to export (indicates its being re-compressed). If I do this, am I losing quality?

Have never seen this on our system when doing an Export > Quicktime Movie > Current Settings from a DVCPro HD timeline. It’s always in the correct anamorphic frame size, either 960×720, 1280×1080 or 1440×1080.
Be sure you’re not editing in a ProRes timeline.

Not using Pro Res. (can’t use Pro Res at all, even for playback, on my ancient Dual 2GHZ G5) 🙂
Everything created using the AJA Easy Setup for 1080i/29.97 DVCPRO HD.
Hmm.. Very odd. Thanks for helping me figure out its not normal.

Using the old Avid trick of narrowing down the timeline, I found that the presence of a number of clips in the opening tease caused the export to be done at 1920 x 1080 instead of 1280 x 1080. The crazy thing is all the footage reads in the browser as DVCPRO HD 1280 x 1080….there is no Uncompressed HD footage in the project.
Adding the Broadcast safe filter to the entire tease and forcing a render causes the export to be done correctly, as the sequence now refers to render file instead of the original footage…which must have some weird header corruption.
