Creating OMFs
I can’t create usable OMFs from my FCP project. Here are the specs: FCP 5.1.4; 9 audio tracks; project length is 00:01:03;08. I’ve tried creating OMFs a few different ways (whole thing, track at a time, in chunks), but concidering the size of the project and the number of tracks I don’t understand why i’m getting problems. I’m checking the OMFs in an AVID Symphony Nitris on a PC. Am I missing something here?

Can you give us more info….what do you mean by not usable?
You do know that exported OMF files from FCP will NOT work in an Avid, right??…they will only work in an audio program, like Pro Tools.
You can move an OMF into Avid using Automatic Duck, which can export in the mode that Avid’s can understand.

Hey John,
the error message i got was “An ACCESS_VIOLATION exception occured…” then it goes on to say where to find the log entry for the error. What you say about not being able to import OMFs into AVID confuses me because AVID uses OMF media files and I’m sure that in the past i’ve been able to swap audio OMFs between Meridian systems. I guess what you’re saying is that it’s not my OMF that’s at fault but it’s that I have no program that can read it. So I’d appreciate any knowlege you can pass on to me.

Once again, OMF files exported from FCP cannot be read by Avids. They will only work in Digital Audio Workstations.
You need the Automatic Duck Plugin, where you can select “Avid Compatibility Mode” in order to do this.
Automatic Duck has a forum on the Cow. Wes Plate, the author of the plug is the moderator and can answer any question you might have about this.
