i get this often. I just switch to list view instead of column when browsing m2v files.

You need to install the Avid codec on your mac, so you can re-encode the files to the Avid version of the DV50 codec…which is the only one readable on the PC. The regular one you captured to on the Mac will not work on a PC.

He has a MacPro, Tom…so he can do it.
The Easy Setups show up, even on non-qualified Kona equipped machines (such as mine), useless as they are.

If you don’t see ProRes Easy Setups, then you have not updated your Kona drivers for FCS 2.0.

EDL’s were not designed for Non linear editors. They were invented for linear tape based editing controllers. 1970’s technology! There was no such thing as multiple video tracks, clip names, filters…etc. Reel names had to be short, because you were using something that barely qualifys as a computer by todays standards to control everything. EDL’s were adapted for nonlinear use, but the protocol has not been updated in any meaningful way for many years.
If you must use an EDL, make sure you make a separate one for each video track. There is no support for multiple video tracks in an EDL.

To be clear, what is traveling out the Firewire is NOT Pro Res…its transcoding to DV NTSC on the fly.

FCP 6 can output a DV signal via Firewire from a timeline that is not DV.
Can also do this from an HD sequence if your system is fast enough.

Is the external drive formatted as FAT32 (PC drive)
Many come this way. You should always reformat for MacOS Extended.

If you edit/render in a DV timeline, there is no difference in quality. Either way, you get the DV compression hit.
If you edit/render in an uncompressed timeline you would be better off bringing the files, as you will not take the DV compression hit before going to Digibeta.
The quality difference will ony be in rendered footage/graphics. The straight camera footage will not be improved by being in an uncompressed timeline and will not be improved by using the files over a DVCAM tape.

In a sense, it IS 1:1. DV is compressed 5:1 IN THE CAMERA/DECK. The Avid is not adding any compression when you capture it. Recapturing 1:1 will not make it any better, if it was DV to start with. It cannot be “uprezzed”…it is what it is. Just set your renders to 1:1 in the Media Creation settings and your effects and graphics will improve by not recompressing as DV.
