    Hello all,

I have an hour and a half project shot on the Panasonic DVX at 24p in Final Cut and we need to master to Digi-Beta.

We do not have access to a Digi-beta deck, so we would need to bring it to a post-house. My question is, what method will ensure for an optimal quality transfer, and is there any difference in quality between these two methods, if at all?

    1. Dumping to a DVcam from FCP and bringing the DVCAM master to the post-house to get transfered to Digi-Beta

    2. Bringing our project files into the post-house, and going straight out to a digi-beta deck

    Thanks in advance!

[Digi07] “1. Dumping to a DVcam from FCP and bringing the DVCAM master to the post-house to get transfered to Digi-Beta”

If you make the DVCAM master over firewire, there is no loss of data. From there, it would depend if they dub it to DigiBeta over component or SDI (SDI is better).

If you take a file to them, it will again depend if they are making the master over component or SDI.

Because there is no lose of data if you can make a firewire DVCAM master, either solution sounds acceptable.

If you edit/render in a DV timeline, there is no difference in quality. Either way, you get the DV compression hit.

If you edit/render in an uncompressed timeline you would be better off bringing the files, as you will not take the DV compression hit before going to Digibeta.

The quality difference will ony be in rendered footage/graphics. The straight camera footage will not be improved by being in an uncompressed timeline and will not be improved by using the files over a DVCAM tape.

We do this for people all the time. I tell people to make an uncompressed version of ther sequence and export a quicktime of that as a self contained. and place it on a transportable FW 800 drive. That way I can plug in the drive and lay it right to digi via SDI.

We do this all the time as well, just like that.
