What is the easiest way to convert a timeline from Avid or Adobe Premiere into Final Cut Pro when you don’t have the money for Automatic Duck?

I’ve been trying to do this with EDL’s but have some problems with reel names that are not tape reels get the same name all the time- and why does all the clips names have to change to numbers?

Is there any tricks with the EDL or is there some applications out there that I might want to try?

    Thanks.

If EDLs don’t work, then the Duck is the only way to go. There is no other application that does this.

EDL’s is really the only other option. I’ve been using the Duck for about three years or so now, it just works and it’s simple.

EDL’s were not designed for Non linear editors. They were invented for linear tape based editing controllers. 1970’s technology! There was no such thing as multiple video tracks, clip names, filters…etc. Reel names had to be short, because you were using something that barely qualifys as a computer by todays standards to control everything. EDL’s were adapted for nonlinear use, but the protocol has not been updated in any meaningful way for many years.

If you must use an EDL, make sure you make a separate one for each video track. There is no support for multiple video tracks in an EDL.

You could also pay a post-house facilty that does have Automatic Duck to transfer the project for you if you don’t want to buy the programme yourself.

[austin] “and why does all the clips names have to change to numbers?”

Because it’s not a clip in an edl. It’s the edit number. Edit 001, 002, 003, 004, etc. It’s for linear. It’s just a list, and you’d go through the list linearly on an editing system. Changing tapes as you go. No clips.
