I guess that gap clips can get to be less than a frame because FCPX supports subframe audio editing?

You might have gotten that timecode message because the tape has 25fps timecode. That would also explain the picture being screwed up.
The deck might seemingly be playing it okay, as some newer decks can do some tricks to play other formats, but it might not be doing a real standards conversion and giving FCP a signal it can deal with.
An older “true” Beta SP deck would just not play the tape. -
Just add the extension. They should read just fine.

Storylines are what the whole editing model is based on, for better or worse. Compound clips are connected to clips in the main storyline. Not to each other. Hence, no transitions.
If you have a series of clips that need transitions, you turn them into a secondary storyline.
In 10.0.1, this can happen automatically, and you can add transitions.

Have you downloaded and installed the latest XDCAM AMA plugin? It’s not included in the MC install anymore.

Use 1920 x 1080. It’s the actual frame size of 1080i and 1080p HD.
1440 is an anamorphic version of 1920…it uses non square pixels to fill a1920 frame to keep the dats rate down.
Use Compressor to convert the 1440 stuff and set it to square pixels.

Seriously. Pick you favorite format and use Compressor to convert everything to it.

Use my Blackmagic Studio card all the time for NTSC and PAL projects.
You haven’t given much useful info to help you.
I would try uninstalling the driver (using the uninstaller app). Download the latest driver from the BMD website and try installing again. If you aren’t seeing Blackmagic as an output choice, something is wrong.

HDCAM is only 1080 (1920 x 1080)
If you import it in a 1080 project and place it in a sequence your Avid will upscale it to fill the frame and you can output to HDCAM.
If you want to output to a 720p master, you need DVCPRO HD, D5 or HDCAM SR.
