  • Why Can’t I Add Transitions To Compound Clips

So I have a couple of clips on top of each other – stills that overlay a texture background in the primary storyline, to make up a single still picture…

I compound these clips so that I can add a seamless transition from my footage to this clip as a whole.

But FCPX won’t allow me to add transitions/dissolve to the start of end of the compounded clip (the start/end of the clip actually highlights in red not yellow).

Am I doing something wrong or can’t this be done?

The only workaround is to keep the clips separate and add separate transitions but it’s fiddly to get them all in sync.

Yes… I could (should) create a single image in Photoshop but working in FCPX would be so much easier.

    Thanks.

Storylines are what the whole editing model is based on, for better or worse. Compound clips are connected to clips in the main storyline. Not to each other. Hence, no transitions.

If you have a series of clips that need transitions, you turn them into a secondary storyline.

In 10.0.1, this can happen automatically, and you can add transitions.

If you’re using 10.0.1, it should work fine. Just select the end (red or otherwise) and hit CMD+T to add a dissolve to it. FCP will automatically add it to a secondary storyline.
