  • final touch works better than fine with HDV. it depends how much work you want to do with it. i would recommend brining as uncompressed as possibly, but if it is simply long form HDV you want to make look much better, i recommend graeme nattresses final touch plug ins. they are almost as amazing as final touch and do wonders for many of HDVs visual ailments.

quicktime yes, dvcpro HD, no. i was checking into this, you can easily do uncompressed 8 and 10 bit, HD and SD, but not the dvcpro HD codec. the lack of DVCPRO HD is across the board on any pc product, apple did the work on encoding for the mac platform only (and it works very well for them). so it will be seamless if you use uncompressed 8 bit 720 for example. you might want uncompressed or image sequences anyhow for combustion and AE.

i wish so too, but no, there is not.

  • i dont think this is an issue anymore. i thought BMD quit installing its codecs a while ago. work camera native or uncompressed.

  • you should use a monitor through a card to view your footage–it is accurate and it does not sap computer resources. the kona will do that AND accelerate your DVCPRO HD for more layers of RT. i use the 1700 and it blows away anything i have seen nears its price. it is not native 1080, but works well enough for that and the 720 is excellent. the 32″ panasonic is supposed to be out of this league for blacks, but i have not seen it other than tradeshows where it stood up well under less than ideal editing light.

that car is a classic! it was the first card that ran FCP on OS X. it worked on a G4. if you are putting together a history of FCP it belongs front and center in the museum!

the hullfish book is amazing. good history lesson on how things got the way they are too which really helps using color correction in any application, plenty of applied techniques too. there literally is nothing out there that compares to it. i have bought about 8 copies for friends in the biz. seriously, ask anyone who really knows color, they have read it.

i was just checking them out at NAB. the downcoverts from 2k to simulanious 1080i, 720p and SD are all seemingly 3 way color corrected in realtime. i do know all downconverts are done on the card…checking this out. Xena 2ke looks really hot and premiere seems to have stepped up its game quite a bit with 2.0.

i know i have done this before, i think the 1200a can play out 1080p and the kona can capture that. so you can take 1080i on the panasonic and play out 1080p which the kona can capture. did i have late night hallucinations from staring at LCDs? i do have the 1080p footage on a drive and i dont have viper!
