are you in DVCPRO HD format the entire time?

    uncompressed is visibly better…

you probably want to give AJA a call and get it rolling. the kona 2 and LH/LHE cards can definitely do realtime downconvert…it happens on the board, so likely there is a wrong setting or something. what does your control panel say?

you upconvert on ingest through SDI. if you dont want to rent a deck, you could even use an SDI card on another machine into the kona 2 or 3.

  • it’s actually a very easy program

maybe it has something in common with the other cards? its not supported or i am sure that AJA would gladly proclaim that it was a certified config. everywhere aja posts or puts out info, only the XENA HS works with premiere pro 2.0.

capture to uncompressed 8-bit or dvcpro HD and work from there. keying (HAH!), color correcting, compositing and rendering time are then much easier…and you have 4:2:2

not a big fan of proprietary codecs–they tend to break from version to version, os to os, etc…

take a look at BMD on the Apple side–they dont even ship those with the drivers anymore…or the pinnacle codecs everyone used on the mac side that are reverse engineered to play back on other systems…

i know the Xena LH/LHE has the ability to capture in all of the standard quicktime plus DPX and AVI, curious about the HS…

a lot of what people are asking of the HS is simply limited by the scope of Premiere. Pro–i.e. offlining, dvcpro HD, etc…and i dont know that it cant==getting my copy and card soon…will find out shortly what it all can do…

because of the premiere being its own feature set and fcp being its own and the facts the cards are well integrated into the applications, it is hard to seperate the two…many decisions are based on platform or applications….and then you could debate which editing suite from apple or adobe suits your needs, etc…

but i would consider hardware scaled upconvert, downconvert, HDV, DVCPRO HD scaling for deck broadcast quality to be big deals and 3rd gen…so for upconvert alone, how many hundeds of dollars per hour of videotape do you pay? own your own terranex yet? need to match SD assets to HD or HDV you just shot? happen to be an apple nut? well, maybe that one makes sense….

the xena HS is HD/SD dual rate and does 10 bit uncompressed, throws a broadcast monitor signal, but what i am looking forward to is the Premiere Pro 2.0 integration.

you really ought to find a reseller with a decent demo artist if you want to schedule a showdown or how it works for you.
