Where can I find product info on legacy KONA cards?
Posted by Alex Salerno on April 28, 2006 at 5:46 pmGreetings all. I am looking to buy an old KONA-SD (used). I can only guess that this product preceeded the KONA2 and KONA3?
Before I buy I would like to get some info on the card. Can this card be used in a G5 or only a G4? 3.3V or 5V?
Are the analog I/O in 10-bits? Is this card still supported? Thanks in advance.

April 28, 2006 at 6:52 pmgreat card. we’ve had one for YEARS. it’ll work just fine in a G5 – don’t put it in the 133 slot though. has NO analog in or out – just SDI with embedded and AES. you’ll need a Keypsan Serial adapter for deck control. Blackmagic Design still writes drivers for and supports the card. Totally solid performance with the latest OS and FCP 5.

April 29, 2006 at 1:38 amI still have my trusty Kona SD card. AJA still supports the product. If you want to use FCP 5 you will need to download the latest drivers from Black Magic.
There was a hardware update to allow using the card in a G5.
Contact Rudy at AJA tech support for details.

April 29, 2006 at 1:42 amIf I were you, I would consider a NEW Kona LS (if you want to spend very little money), or a Blackmagic Decklink SD ($295). You can’t base your business on a card from one company that another writes the software for.

April 29, 2006 at 6:56 pmthat car is a classic! it was the first card that ran FCP on OS X. it worked on a G4. if you are putting together a history of FCP it belongs front and center in the museum!

April 29, 2006 at 11:47 pmYeah well the Kona SD is still operational and is supported by AJA unlike other companies such as Sin-a -went-away which is now DOA.

May 1, 2006 at 4:36 pmCinewave didn’t really just go away. It was bought out, then killed, by Avid. Not quite the same thing.

May 1, 2006 at 6:04 pmI disagree, I think we all saw the writing on the wall before Avid bought out the Pinnacle….Cinewave was always overpriced IMHO……compared to what else was out there for the money….sure it did things other cards couldnt….but the cost didnt seem to justify…yes I know Walter will disagree…..

I never meant to imply it went away only that it died.
The name I used to describe the product was done so to protect the innocent I mean guilty.
