i didnt get the previous post about acceleration. the only thing hardware accelerated in the FCP universe is the RT extreme architecture in the Kona 3. this is good for the scaled HD codec like HDV, XDCAM and DVCPRO HD and operators in those fomats will notice RT like you cannot get without the kona hardware.
to be clear, IOHD does not have that, IOHD seems to be based on the concept that since apple introduced PRORES 422- a full raster format. as we all will see, much of what was done uncompressed now does not necessarily have to be since this is a viable option. IOHD brings that to the laptops as well as legacy hardware that a PCI-card cannot do. so in that sense, if you own one of those machines, IOHD is the lifeline to the workflow of today as defined by FCS2.
IOHD does much of the work on the way in and out that is high end and professional–the hardware up, down, cross and aspect ratios on the fly. the encoding to ProRes 422. all happens in the box.
if you simply need analog to the Kona 3 because you work in compressed HD camera native formats, the HD10AVA does the trick with 4 channels of embedded audio. adding that to the kona 3 allows all formats from DVHS to a real 2k workflow.
i think these are two different products with some overlap, but at the end of the day, one of them can serve an editors needs.

what does control panel say about your current connection?

hidden agenda? heck ask avid–apple wants to sell you the hardware!
seriously-the pro res 422 is computationally expensive. a lot has gone on in computing and an 8 core on FCP 6 really illustrates that. i had a 2.0 G5 pci-x, i had been holding on to the quad G5, but now the 8 core has much more value to me with this suite. my quad G5 works, but doesnt have the “PING”. my friends with 8 cores are reporting increased RT around all facets of the application.

i would assume lower latency is due to FW800 protocol and maybe some engineering feats, AJA tightened up the IO considerably over the 4 years of development. As far as the FW 800 of the IOHD and the FW400 of the IO series, the bitrates stay the same over a larger pipe. Prores 422 HQ HD formats are merely 220megabits and as everyone is gettting to know, that equates the bitrate of full faster 10 bit high quality HD application codec with that of uncompressed SD.
SIDENOTE or maybe the point:
you are not supposed to use firewire drives on the same bus with the IO, IOHD or most other video firewire device that captures and does not transfer. you can use the PC or PCI-express 34 slot for the storage device be it firewire 400, 800 or eSata. -
i do know that the new kona 3x can work with the new apple xserve with the optional bracket from apple, i had not heard of anyone using an io/ioLA with it. i guess it could fit neat if you got the optional 1/2 rack mounts for them.

“do you think the ioHD, with the hardware ProRes codec, has or will change the thinking on the viability of a laptop v. desktop in closing the gap? ”
oh, definitely it is closing the gap! it wont replace desktops, but what can be done in the field for HD wont be the same after this ships in july.
HDV on a laptop is near punishment if you are pushing pixels. scaling, IBP compression, no monitoring. ioHD brings full raster, i-frame and monitoring. it makes laptops use a codec they could not have used in capture.
so here is the beauty. if you bought a desktop for heavy work you could use the ioHD on both.

can you test the footage you previously converted with the terranex and upconvert the same footage with the kona2/3? you would get a really good indication of how well it can look.

you could actually dump it to VHS and recapture once or twice. that would make it bad enough to not be able to identify the person perpetrating the crime on video. seems to work for that industry. also, use a tape from your sister that had “Days of our lives” retaped on it 42 times, it will add noise and authentic security quality video!

what on earth would give you that idea? first, adobe has to ship CS3, then AJA has to bring the driver out for that release. that speculation just seems crazy in he first place, let alone posting it around.

it’s a little tightly branded with Apple. i would not hold my breath nor expect it to work with primary editors outside of FCP.
