Peter, I think he meant the Zoom’s SD card filled up. To boost your levels you need to do that in an audio app or your nle. Depending on how low the levels are you may have to do a couple of passes by raising the level, exporting the audio file, reimporting and then raising levels again until you have enough level. Understand that all the noise in the signal will also be increased. You can remove some of that noise with an app like Izotope RX. You could also try playing the Zoom and taking its output into a preamp which you use to raise the levels. You’d record that raised signal with your nle or an audio app or second Zoom.

The best practice is to do a clean install then reinstall your apps. You already have a bootable backup of your current config which is good. For more protection you might want to remove one of the 2 drives with 10.6 and install 10.8 onto a new drive. Later, after you backup 10.8 to your second drive, you still have the 10.6 drive in case you need to go back to that.

I’d use Compressor or Squeeze to encode the mv2 and ac3 files. In Compressor, be sure to turn on Frame Controls and use the highest applicable quality settings. DVDs are not HD, so there will be some degradation. However, starting with HD footage should look better than SD.

I’m not an expert on disk operations, but if FCP is using a file, you probably can’t write to that file. If FCP was shut down and you made a change in Motion and saved it, the next time you open FCP the new file should be used. If no one chimes in here, you might get an answer on the Apple Motion forum.

Is your G-Raid the only unit connected to your FW port(s)? FW can get funky even with just 2 drives. Even though a machine may have multiple FW ports, they’re is only one controller. If other things are connected to any FW port on your machine, unplug them and see what happens. I agree it’s weird that Disk Utility sees the drive, but can’t mount it.

I’m reading your post as I sit here waiting for Disk Warrior to complete its work on my machine. It’s another route you can try when odd things start happening in FCPX. Also, Repair Permissions after DW. When a program loses track of where bits are on a drive, all sorts of unexplainable things happen.

Try your conversion in Compressor. Turn on Frame Controls and select the highest quality for retiming. This can take a while to render so test with a short clip-one with some motion so you can judge the judder.

Some software limits the length of a clip it will process if a license isn’t up to date. I’m not familiar with your workflow, but could that be the case? Also, if you have Disk Warrior, I’d give that a try. It’s cleaned up so many weird issues over the years for me, I can’t recommend it enough.
