Converting 29.97fps to 23.98fps.

I need to convert about 15 short clips to 23.98fps, which were originally 29.97fps. I am working in fcp 7. I tried compressing the clips in media manager but received a message that says “Frame Rate Conflict Found. The frame rate of the preset chosen for recompression differs from items in your selection. The preset’s frame rate will be ignored and the original rate of the items in your selection retained.” Unless I am missing something, this defeats the purpose.

Then I tried to export as a quicktime movie and that seems to work. When I bring it back into FCP the clip itself plays smoothly. But when I drop it into my timeline (which is set at 23.98) then it is very jerky. HELP! Is there anyway to do this internally? And if not, anyone suggest a business that I can pay to convert this footage? I am outside of the US.

Creatively it could work just fine to have a different “look and feel” to these clips so any work arounds are appreciated too.

Try your conversion in Compressor. Turn on Frame Controls and select the highest quality for retiming. This can take a while to render so test with a short clip-one with some motion so you can judge the judder.

I would use a hardware encoding.
