IMHO the best way to do this is with Flash. You can create a simple interface/player with navigation buttons or embed the buttons over the video – whatever works best for your client. Flash offers the greatest visual quality for a given data rate as well as complete interactive flexibility. And the Flash can be added easily to any website. And you don’t need special streamming servers, etc. You use progressive download which makes it easy. You can add captioning, too, if that is necessary.

Are you capturing from the deck that recorded the program? If not, try capturing from there. It’s possible the head alignment is out on one of the decks.

I’m not sure I understand your problem. If you sync to video using sticks, if you start a scene’s audio file at the point the sticks close, then in FCP, the editor lines up your audio to the same frame of the video where the sticks close. Then a Cmd-L will lock the video and audio for that scene together.

You should also check aut Automatic Duck. It will get omf files in and out of FCP. https://www.automaticduck.com/products/options-fcp-user.php

November 26, 2006 at 4:30 pm in reply to: Closed Captioning

Tell us about the components of your edit system. How do you get audio and video to your deck, etc.

Another thing to think about is that closed captions are embedded in the video signal. Are the commercials coming with closed captions? I think you can just insert the commercials and maintain the captions when you remaster, but I’m no expert in this area. You should check with your captioning people to make sure you maintain the captions in your new master.

November 19, 2006 at 4:09 pm in reply to: Audio Mix Question

I’m not clear how you want to use these tracks again. Is it a different section of your show or an ntire re-mix? If it’s just to use them again x minutes later or in a different sequence, why not copy and paste?

  • Another thought might be to combine the LS RS channels derived from delay, etc. with some point sources such as appropriate animals (or other) sounds from the rear.

October 9, 2006 at 10:25 pm in reply to: Exporting to Flash with Alpha Channel

I may have read your post wrong. If you want to export directly from FCP with an alpha and then use that mov to encode, I think you can do that, although, I don’t do it that way. I’ve always used AE to create the alpha, exported that mov and encoded that with On2 VP6 in Squeeze to use in Flash. Sorry if I confused you.

I believe that the On2 VP6 codec is the only one. It’s an add-on option with Squeeze for Flash. It doesn’t come with the basic Squeeze Flash encoding program. That one uses the older codec that doesn’t support alpha. You also get it if you have Flash 8 Pro. It’s a part of Flash Encoder that comes with it. If you’re going to buy one of these products (and you don’t want to make Flash content) I’d suggest Squeeze as you get many more options for controlling an encode compared to the Flash 8 encoder. However, if you’re going to get into Flash, then buying the Pro version gets you the encoder.
