Interesting issue. I am mastering to Beta SP. Under normal consitions, I crash record on the deck and then playback the FCP and there are no problems.

Now, I am going to be receiving Beta SP tapes from the Closed Captiuoning folks and will need to insert commercials into the Beta SP tape. I am intending to purchase the Black Magic Decklink SP to be able to control the deck for the insert edit. I was wondering if anyone has any other (cheaper) ideas to get the same thing done. Buying this piece of gear really cuts into my profit margin. Thanks.

Tell us about the components of your edit system. How do you get audio and video to your deck, etc.

Another thing to think about is that closed captions are embedded in the video signal. Are the commercials coming with closed captions? I think you can just insert the commercials and maintain the captions when you remaster, but I’m no expert in this area. You should check with your captioning people to make sure you maintain the captions in your new master.

I’m working with FCP 4.1 on a G4. You can’t re-digitze the video into the FCP because it will not recognize line 21, where the captioning is.

I’m just looking for a cheaper solution than the Black Magic Decklink to do a simple insert edit onto a Beta SP tape.

I am aware of the issues you presented in your reply and thank you. CC is very ticklish.

FCP does digitize line 21. This is just another part of the video signal. You can check for the CC encoding on an underscan monitor. Digitize the video, insert your commercial in FCP and layback to tape. Check CC encoding on a TV.
