I just saw that Panasonic has introduced the P2 Gear which is a field playback unit. It can connect to an external HD so you can store P2 data on it.

    Here’s a link to a story about it https://www.eventdv.net/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=12398

July 27, 2007 at 2:08 pm in reply to: how to p2 on documentary..manpower

We only have the four P2 cards that came with our 500 so we do the following. We have a video engineer on our shoots. As soon as a P2 is filled, he transfers it using P2 Genie and our MBP to a RAID 1 hard drive which makes an instant backup. At night, we copy that drive to a second regular hard drive. When we travel, the drives are hand-carried by different people on Pelican cases.

The engineer also checks playback from portions of the copied P2 card using HD Log (which can also off-load the P2 cards) before re-formatting the card. The workflow for handing the P2 cards is obviously critical. Whoever does it must understand the process completely and NEVER stop in the middle of the process for any reason. One mistake and you lose your data. I recall a thread not too long ago on this forum where data was lost.

Try removing noise using Soundtrack Pro. That might help a lot.

July 25, 2007 at 8:28 pm in reply to: Need Help with Chroma Keying & Flash

Your client could be causing the issues by their encoding parameter choices. Have you checked your exported file in AfterFX (or Motion) over some background to double-check the key? If it’s clean there, too, the client’s causing it. Flash programmers try to limit bandwidth by only keying the subject over a background inside Flash. By not including the bkg in the video the data rate needs are much less. If they’re not using the On2 VP6 codec they should.

If you have a MXO it can be used as a scan converter. I just did this for a client who only had Flash versions of their videos on a CD. I played the Flash on my MBP out through the MXO and captured the component signal with FCP. It looked great.

FCP doesn’t like 44.1. Make sure you’ve rendered everything. You could also try exporting a QT first and then converting to wmv from that.

July 25, 2007 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Best Media Drive for MBP 17″ (250-320gb)

We’ve been using a G-Safe dual drive that is RAID1. That means that when you copy your P2 data to the drive it copies that same thing to both drives at the same time giving you an instant backup. Ours has two 750GB drives so you can capture up to 750 GB. BTW check out P2 Genie which is excellent simple (and inexpensive) software to off-load P2 cards to your drive.

V2 of the MXO software allows monitor adjustment/calibration. But, read the user guide carefully so you set everything up properly. As I said above, side-by-side, the MXO connected to a Cinema 23 looked identical to my Panasonic BT-LH1700WP broadcast monitor.
