We recently got the 17″ Panasonic monitor for our field package. We also have a Matrox MXO hooked up to a 23″ Cinema display. Side-by-side they look identical.

I’m not knocking the camera. I own it. It’s one of those rare purchases where you are 100% satisfied. All I’m saying is before you spend more than the cost of this camera on an HD lens, check out what you can see through it. It might only be incremental. You might need that megapixel block to take advantage of the high-end HD lens.

Flash penetration is over 98%. Check out Sorenson’s Squeeze for Flash. I think the current version is 4.5.

Duel adaptor connects with the express card slot on the side of the MBP. Also check out P2 Genie and HD Log for off-loading files and/or viewing them.

While I agree completely that better glass is always preferable, I suggest that anyone interested in this camera give it a test drive. While the entire package is a compromise with smaller sensor, reduced feature set, etc. compared to higher-end cameras, the results are terrific. For our level of production the package is an enormous step up from Betacam. The images are sharp! I can see individual hairs on people’s heads (a makeup challenge). Check out the screen shots in the review above. If you really need true HD glass, this might not be the camera for you.

Also P2 Genie, but only for off-loading P2s. It’s not as comprehensive as P2 Log and HD Log.

Final Cut will export a wav or aiff file much faster than real time.

Also, check out P2 Genie. It automates the off-loading of P2 cards. If you need a way to view the footage on your laptop, also check out HD Log (which also off loads P2 cards and can repair P2 volumes). HD Log is a lot more expensive than P2 Genie.

We’ve had our HPX500 since the middle of June. Since then we’ve shot two projects with it. The quality is amazing. It’s extremely flexible. We use the Panasonic 17″ broadcast monitor (also amazing) and the remote camera control unit. We’ve tested many of the HD options and have shot both 24 and 30p. The dynamic range of the image is breath-taking. It’s very important to plan your workflow before shooting. I have not shot with other HD cameras so I can’t compare it to competing products.

July 9, 2007 at 9:28 am in reply to: View mxf without fcp

You have to show Raylight where the mxf files are located. It won’t scan all your drives. Drag the folder containing the Contents and Lastclip files to the rectangular box at the bottom of the Raylight dialogue. Then Raylight will see the files and do it’s translation.

If you still have problems, go to the Raylight site’s support page and submit a question. They are very responsive.
