how to p2 on documentary..manpower

so we are looking at this whole P2 tapeless thing, and we are curious as to how, or who, to wrangle the cards
do you hire someone or is it one more task you have to delegate to what already may be a lean crew ie a pa does it at night?
i understand the technology needed, but who runs the technology?

normally the camera assistant runs it. The best thing is, to have enough cards to cover one days shooting.
Always double back up on two seperate HD’s, make shure you don’t copy one contents folder double and leave another not copied.
I make one copy of the original contents folder on one HD, on the other I import the P2 files via FCP.Rainer
3 years work experience with P2 without one lost file.

July 27, 2007 at 2:08 pmWe only have the four P2 cards that came with our 500 so we do the following. We have a video engineer on our shoots. As soon as a P2 is filled, he transfers it using P2 Genie and our MBP to a RAID 1 hard drive which makes an instant backup. At night, we copy that drive to a second regular hard drive. When we travel, the drives are hand-carried by different people on Pelican cases.
The engineer also checks playback from portions of the copied P2 card using HD Log (which can also off-load the P2 cards) before re-formatting the card. The workflow for handing the P2 cards is obviously critical. Whoever does it must understand the process completely and NEVER stop in the middle of the process for any reason. One mistake and you lose your data. I recall a thread not too long ago on this forum where data was lost.

July 27, 2007 at 4:33 pmPersonally I think it’s critical to hire someone specifically to do this- be it an experienced AC or DIT. If you hand it off to some random PA you risk the entire day’s footage to save a few bucks. That’s penny wise but pound foolish.
Now you know, and knowing’s half the battle.

Rainer…P2 has only been out for 1.5 years…how can you have 3 years experience with it? The HVX 200 was released Jan 2006.

P2 predates the HVX-200. It was originally marketed for ENG use with 2/3″ SD cameras like the SPX-800 or SPC-700.

Unfortunately, it looks like it will be tape, at least for a while, for me.

In that case the P2 workflow might not be for you. It is not meant for all situations. Remote locales with many hours shooting is not ideal.
