Unfortunately, you need a separate interface for using the voiceover tool. The IO won’t work. Search the forum and you’ll find a lot of discussion about this.

Walter, I was thinking of you when I saw this rumor. I remember one of your posts about getting a new machine toward the end of the year. Of course, you’re right. The differences between a new machine and old are usually incremental. I just like to go with the latest when I’m buying. I still use a Quadra 900 with a Sonic Solutions audio editing system that works great – and in real time.

What drove me to post this was the fact that I got burned this summer with a MacBook Pro purchase I received the day Apple announced the new one. C’est la vie! Now I’m getting ready to upgrade to an Octo and this will cause me to wait a while longer.

The article states, “The new 8-core Harpertown Mac Pro should debut anytime after mid-November and almost certainly by Macworld Expo in January.

September 29, 2007 at 11:51 pm in reply to: How do I capture analog audio into FCP?

Do you have ref video going to your Kona? FCP may want a video source for timing even though it’s only recording audio. Try sending some video to the card while you try to record the audio and see what happens.

    September 7, 2007 at 8:36 pm in reply to: Raylight,P2, + FCP

Yes. When FCP captures the MXF file it writes a QT on your drives roughly the same size as the MXF data. However, Raylight rights small files (about 4k, I think) that link to the MXF media. Speed and quality are the same as using the FCP-captured media. The difference is you’re not taking up a lot of disk space with new full-size QTs.

However, always be sure to backup all your MXF data before editing just in case. We do that in the field when we shoot. The P2s are off-loaded to a mirrored RAID and all clips are checked before the P2 is re-formatted. At the end of the day we copy the mirrored RAID to another hard drive as a backup. That backup drive ultimately becomes the archive drive for the project.

I don’t believe that version of FCP will do what you want. You need to upgrade to at least 5.1.2. We use a very similar workflow (just 16GB cards) to what you describe and it works perfectly with 5.1.2.

    September 7, 2007 at 12:41 am in reply to: Raylight,P2, + FCP

Raylight lets you edit directly with mxf files without capturing /converting them to QT files with FCP. It very quickly creates small QT files on your hard drive that you simply import to your FCP project and use to edit.

Normally, I do capture P2 files with FCP since I only capture the scenes and takes I want, and the capture is faster than my ability to review the clips, so it doesn’t cost me any time. And it creates another level of backup. I archive all the original mxf files from the P2 cards and the QT files created by FCP during capture.

September 4, 2007 at 2:03 pm in reply to: Audio Levels

Fixing clipping with Sonic or other noise restoration apps depends on how bad the clipping is. If it’s an occassional instance, using de-crackling or de-clicking can be effective. However, from the description, it sounds like the audio is massively clipped. In this case, I’m not sure if noise restoration would help. You might try googling forensic audio and contact people who are expert in the field.

    September 4, 2007 at 12:48 pm in reply to: Field P2 workflow…. update/recap please?

You have to install the Duel P2 driver for the MBP (I also believe there’s a Panasonic driver, too). We stayed with 10.4.8 on the MBP since at the time the Duel driver wouldn’t work with later versions of the OS. However, Duel now has a beta driver for 10.4.9 and 10.4.10
