Audio Levels
Hi,
I just received the tapes for a show I need to edit. The audio level is at -24 dB but it sounds REALLY over modulated. I need to boost the audio level so it can be heard but how do I do that and at the same time clean up the sound so it’s not so over modulated??
Any help would be appreciated!!

Impedence has nothing to do with unbalanced or balanced. You can send balanced to unbalanced with proper wiring of the plugs. + g – to + g. you will get a 6db loss.
If the signal was overdriven before being recorded at -24, that is the problem.KB

The tapes aren’t dubs. These are the master tapes from the live recording. So they can’t “fix” anything for me.

If the audio was at line level and the input was set to mic level, that would explain the distortion. That would be a severe level mismatch which can cause this type of problem
even when recorded at -24db. (Internal preamps are being overdriven.)KB

Clipping distortion is not fixable. CEDAR decrackle can help a bit on intermod distortion.
Trying to redraw waveforms is fantasy.

Michael is absolutely right. Your only hope (as mentioned above) is there’s another recording you can try to sync to the picture. This will probably be a time consuming process.

Nope! No other recordings are available. This was a “live to tape” interview at a public access channel. All I have is the master DVCAM tapes.

Sonic Solutions used to have a hardware/software audio suite called NoNoise which even back on NuBuss Macs was an amazing piece of audio gear. Today, you can buy the NoNoise software as a plugin for ProTools but I have no first-hand experience if the ProTools plugin is as good (or rather, as awesome) as the Sonic Solution tool of yesteryear. It would clean up all forms of over-modulation and peak distortions.
But at $1500 for the plugin, not even including the cost of ProTools, I doubt it’s the way you’d want to go to fix this problem, but I thought I’d throw it out there in case it saves someone else down the line.

Fixing clipping with Sonic or other noise restoration apps depends on how bad the clipping is. If it’s an occassional instance, using de-crackling or de-clicking can be effective. However, from the description, it sounds like the audio is massively clipped. In this case, I’m not sure if noise restoration would help. You might try googling forensic audio and contact people who are expert in the field.
