As Ty alluded, plug any air leaks. Sound travels easily through air, so any leak will let in sound. When we built our current studio, we built a room within a room. When I was testing the space, I heard people talking in the next room. When I closely reviewed the construction I found the contractor had failed to properly caulk all the seams around the sheetrock. Once that was done, the sound leak was gone. Use weather stripping around the door. Our sound booth has a device on the bottom of the door that presses down a seal to the threshold when the door is closed.

There are many parameters that add up to great sound: good recording techniques, eq, compression, etc. Professional sound shops have as many tools, plugins, etc for sound as video pros have for editing. You should post this kind of question on the Audio Professionals forum where you’ll get some very good info.

Within most Flash encoding apps there’s an audio selection for kbps which affects audio fidelity. Make sure you’re using at least 64kbps for mono and 128 kbps for stereo. 128 kbps is a fairly standard bit rate for downloaded mp3s, although, some sites are starting to offer 256 kbps as a higher-quality alternative.

Be aware that the audio bit rate adds to the video bit rate and you should know what kind of pipe your viewers will have. You can crank up the overall bit rate, but that might lead to long buffer times, interrupted programs, etc. if the viewer has a slow connection.

We use a mirrored RAID in the field so every time a card is saved to it, there’s an instant backup. Then every evening, we copy that drive to one more drive so the data is on three separate drives. When we travel, the drives are carried by different people and if we fly, they never go in baggage, always as carry-on.

After we edit, the third drive becomes the archive of the project and goes on the shelf. Adjust the size of your drives to the size of your typical project.

I thought of one other thing that would give you a render bar in FCP – the wrong sample rate for the audio. Audio needs to be 48kHz 16 (or 24) bit. If it’s not, then FCP wants to render the audio, so be sure to export from Premiere using 48k audio.

Yes. I’m referring to FCP settings. I’ve never tried what you want to do, but I’ve created movies in AfterFX and then imported them into FCP so they drop in the timeline without rendering.

I don’t know how FCP treats avis. If the FCP settings match the parameters of the avi, it should work. You may have to experiment a bit to find the right setting. At the least the 16:9 file should open up in a 16:9 window in FCP. Then if you have a render line, you need to play with the FCP settings. I’m on a mac and I assume you’re on a pc since you’re using avis. In your timeline settings make sure you’ve selected uncompressed avi or whatever form you’ve exported.

Another thing to watch. Sometimes after you’ve dragged the file into the FCP timeline and then changed settings, it doesn’t apply properly. Remove the file from the timeline and then drag it into the sequence again.
