Exporting 16:9 AVI Files for use in FCP
Posted by Doug Broomfield on December 7, 2007 at 7:40 pmFrom Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 we are exporting uncompressed Microsoft AVI (16:9/1.2) files for broadcast (eventual output to Digibeta). They re-import into Premiere fine. But when we try to import into a FCP system they come in 4:3 stretched and they need to be re-rendered in letterbox before being exported to tape. What can we do so they come in natively 16:9 to FCP? Is there a setting in Premier? Is it a FCP setting? There are reasons we need to export AVI files and not QT, so we need to stay with AVI.
Thanks for any help.

December 8, 2007 at 2:05 ammost importantly have you set the capture settings to anamorphic? if not , do so and recapture.
also be sure to have project and sequence settings set to anamorphic.

December 9, 2007 at 2:11 amI assume you are talking about my FCP settings right, not my Premiere Pro export settings? If so, we don’t want to have to “capture” the AVIs in FCP. We simply want to dump them in a folder, link to the folder and drop the AVIs on the timeline and then export to Digibeta. If we make sure that the FCP project and sequence settings are anamorphic can we get around having to recapture?

December 9, 2007 at 3:31 pmYes. I’m referring to FCP settings. I’ve never tried what you want to do, but I’ve created movies in AfterFX and then imported them into FCP so they drop in the timeline without rendering.
I don’t know how FCP treats avis. If the FCP settings match the parameters of the avi, it should work. You may have to experiment a bit to find the right setting. At the least the 16:9 file should open up in a 16:9 window in FCP. Then if you have a render line, you need to play with the FCP settings. I’m on a mac and I assume you’re on a pc since you’re using avis. In your timeline settings make sure you’ve selected uncompressed avi or whatever form you’ve exported.
Another thing to watch. Sometimes after you’ve dragged the file into the FCP timeline and then changed settings, it doesn’t apply properly. Remove the file from the timeline and then drag it into the sequence again.

December 9, 2007 at 11:52 pmThanks so much John. I’ll pass this on to my FCP guys and see what we can come up with. Appreciate all the help and advice.

December 11, 2007 at 5:35 pmI thought of one other thing that would give you a render bar in FCP – the wrong sample rate for the audio. Audio needs to be 48kHz 16 (or 24) bit. If it’s not, then FCP wants to render the audio, so be sure to export from Premiere using 48k audio.
